Chapter 10 - The Queen of the North Side

Six months later.
The grand reopening of Sarah’s Corner Diner was the biggest event the North Side of Chicago had seen in decades.
The building had been completely restored into a stunning, vintage-style diner with sleek chrome accents, warm leather booths, and massive glass display cases filled with fresh pastries. But it wasn't just a diner anymore—it was a community cornerstone.
Outside, two discreet black SUVs were parked, guarding the street, but inside, the room was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious smell of sizzling bacon and fresh blueberry pancakes.
Misha, wearing a small white chef’s apron over his nice clothes, was proudly carrying a plate of pancakes to a corner table, showing off his newly learned serving skills.
I stood behind the register, laughing as I watched him.
A heavy, warm arm slid around my waist from behind. I leaned back into Mikhail’s broad chest, feeling the steady, comforting beat of his heart against my back. He was wearing a sharp navy suit, looking every bit the ruler of the city, but here in my diner, he was simply the man who loved me.
“He is getting better with the plates,” Mikhail murmured into my ear, his breath tickling my skin.
“He’s a natural,” I smiled, turning in his arms to face him. “Just like his father.”
Mikhail reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee in front of the crowded room—that wasn't his style. Instead, he opened the box right there behind the counter, revealing a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring that sparkled under the warm diner lights.
“Six months ago, a wet little boy walked into this diner during a storm,” Mikhail whispered, looking into my eyes with devotion. “You gave him food, you gave him warmth, and then you gave him your blood to keep him safe. You saved my family, Sarah. Now, let me spend the rest of my life protecting yours.”
Tears of joy welled up in my eyes. I looked down at the ring, then up at the man who had turned my world upside down.
“Yes,” I whispered, sliding my hand into his. “Yes, Mikhail.”
Misha came running over from the booth, jumping up and down with a massive grin on his face. “Does this mean Sarah is staying forever, Papa?!”

Mikhail picked up his son with one arm, wrapping his other arm around my waist, pulling us both into a tight, unbreakable embrace.
“Yes, Misha,” Mikhail smiled, pressing a kiss against my lips as the diner erupts into cheers. “Sarah is staying forever.”
