Chapter 4 - The Fortress of San Gabriel

By dawn, San Gabriel Medical Center had been transformed into an impenetrable armed compound.

Black SUVs with tinted windows lined the ambulance bay. Men in dark tactical gear stood watch at every elevator bank and stairwell, checking security credentials with cold, mechanical efficiency. The ordinary nurses and doctors walked on eggshells, whispering among themselves about the sudden arrival of the legendary Blackwood syndicate inside a public hospital.

I sat in the plush leather armchair beside Ethan’s private ICU bed, watching the rise and fall of his chest. His color was slowly returning to his cheeks. The dark, terrifying bruises that had erupted across his skin during the collapse were fading into a faint yellowish tint.

The door clicked open, and Adrian walked in, carrying a white paper bag from an upscale downtown bakery and a cup of black coffee. He had changed into a fresh charcoal-gray suit, his hair neatly combed, though the faint dark circles under his eyes betrayed the fact that he hadn't slept a wink.

He set the bag and coffee on the bedside table without a word, pulling up a chair directly across from mine.

“He’s going to wake up soon,” Adrian said quietly, his gaze fixed on Ethan’s sleeping face. “The doctors say his bone marrow is responding exceptionally well to the transfusion. Whatever rare genetic anomaly he inherited from my side of the family... it’s stabilized.”

“Thank God,” I murmured, wrapping my hands tightly around my coffee cup to stop them from shaking.

“Don't thank God, Clara,” Adrian replied with a grim, humorless smirk. “Thank the fifty liters of plasma we pumped into him.”

Before I could snap back at his cynicism, a soft knock echoed at the door.

Bram, Adrian’s towering, granite-faced head of security, stepped into the room. He didn't look at me; he walked straight up to Adrian, leaning down to whisper directly into his ear.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. A muscle jumped in his cheek. The dark, predatory aura that I knew all too well instantly flooded the room.

“Speak up, Bram,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension. “If it concerns my son, I have a right to know.”

Adrian looked up, his eyes locking onto mine with grim seriousness. “Vane’s people made a move.”

My breath caught. Victor Vane was Adrian’s most brutal, unhinged rival—a man who controlled the shipping docks and weapon smuggling rings across the West Coast, and who had been trying to dethrone the Blackwood syndicate for a decade.

“How did they find out?” I whispered, panic rising in my throat. “We came straight here! No one knew!”

“In my line of work, Clara, secrets don't stay buried for long,” Adrian said coldly, standing up and adjusting his cuffs. “A pediatric emergency involving a rare genetic match at San Gabriel Medical Center doesn't happen quietly. Vane’s informants inside the hospital flagged the restricted DNA alert within ten minutes of it hitting the central server.”

“Are they... are they coming here?” I asked, my voice trembling as I looked down at sleeping Ethan.

“They’re trying,” Adrian replied, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile cutting across his face. “Which is why Bram and his team are currently dismantling Vane’s advance scouts in the subterranean parking garage. This hospital is locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary. Nobody gets in. And nobody gets out.”

He walked toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass handle. He turned back to look at me, his expression softening just a fraction.

“Stay here, Clara. Lock the door behind me. I’m going to go remind Victor Vane why my name is still whispered in the dark.”
