Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid

The peace didn't last.

At 11:42 p.m., the hospital’s master power grid suddenly died.

The golden lights of the private suite flickered once, twice, and then snapped off entirely, plunging us into absolute darkness. A second later, the deep, rhythmic hum of the emergency backup generators kicked in, casting everything in an eerie, pulsing red glow from the emergency exit signs.

Whoop. Whoop. Whoop.

The low, automated security klaxon began to wail through the ventilation shafts.

Ethan woke up instantly, gasping in fright and grabbing my hand. “Mom! What’s happening? Is it an earthquake?”

“Stay in bed, Ethan,” I ordered, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I jumped up from my chair, rushing to the door and locking the deadbolt.

Before I could turn around, the heavy oak door shuddered under the immense impact of a shoulder slam from the hallway.

Bang! Bang!

“Clara! Get away from the door!”

Adrian’s voice roared from the antechamber. He had already drawn his Sig Sauer P320 pistol, the dark steel catching the red emergency light as he racked the slide with a lethal, practiced motion.

The glass panel of the door shattered inward in a shower of sparkling shards. A gloved hand reached through the broken frame to flick the interior lock.

Adrian didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired straight through the wood.

Crack!

A muffled groan echoed from the hallway, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the linoleum. But they weren't alone. The entire floor had been compromised. Through the window of Ethan’s room, we could see shadows rushing past in the hallway—armed operatives wearing thermal-imaging helmets and carrying suppressed submachine guns, methodically clearing every room on the pediatric ward.

Victor Vane hadn't sent scouts. He had sent an execution squad.

“Bram! Report!” Adrian shouted into the encrypted comms piece clipped to his collar.

The speaker crackled with heavy static and the distinct, rapid-fire pop of automatic gunfire. “Boss! They hit the ground floor server room with an EMP blast! We’re cut off from the outer gates! Vane’s got at least twenty men moving up the service stairwell!”

“Hold the stairs!” Adrian commanded, his voice absolute and freezing cold. “If a single one of them reaches the third floor, I want you to feed them to the river.”

Adrian turned back toward us, his dark eyes locking onto mine with terrifying clarity. He holstered his pistol for a fraction of a second, grabbed a heavy steel trauma cart, and wedged it beneath the shattered door handle to buy us a few more seconds.

“They’re here for Ethan,” Adrian said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Vane knows that if he controls my bloodline, he controls the syndicate. We need to move. Now.”

“Move where?” I cried, panic finally breaking my voice. “The elevators are dead! The stairwells are crawling with gunmen!”

“The service roof,” Adrian said, pulling a second concealed firearm—a compact Glock—from his waistband and forcing it into my hand. “Clara, listen to me. Take Ethan. Use the maintenance ladder behind the linen closet. Bram has a chopper waiting on the helipad.”

“And you?” I gasped, staring at the cold black metal of the gun in my palm.

Adrian smiled—a dark, fearless, lethal smile that belonged to the king of the underworld.

“I’m going to go clear the path.”
