Chapter 5 - The Aftermath

The silence that followed the digital collapse was deafening. Julian stood in the center of my small living room, the glow of his phone illuminating a face that had aged a decade in a single minute. The men behind him—the high-priced mercenaries—had stopped moving. They were checking their own devices, watching as the Vance conglomerate’s stock plummeted into freefall. One of them looked at Julian, then at me, and quietly stepped back toward the door, realizing that the man who had hired them was no longer a paymaster; he was a liability.

"You've ruined me," Julian whispered, his voice stripped of its usual razor-sharp edge. He looked small, pathetic against the backdrop of my peeling wallpaper.

"I didn't ruin you, Julian," I replied, finally stepping away from the playpen. My son remained undisturbed, a testament to the calm I had cultivated amidst the chaos. "I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own nature. You built your empire on the assumption that you were the only player on the board. You forgot to account for the people you trampled along the way."

I walked toward the window. Below, I could see the flashing lights of police cruisers turning onto our quiet street. It wasn't the authorities I had called—they were simply responding to the mountain of automated tips I had sent to the District Attorney’s office regarding his illicit trade routes.

Julian didn't fight back. He didn't even look at me again. He turned and walked out the door, moving with the sluggish gait of a ghost. I didn't stop him. I knew he had nowhere left to go.
