Chapter 6 - The Unseen Architect

The following weeks were a blur of federal investigators, bank liquidators, and the frantic scraping of lawyers trying to salvage scraps from the wreckage. I, however, had become invisible. By the time the press realized the "Vance Whistleblower" was the woman Julian had discarded, I had already moved.

I sat on a balcony overlooking a quiet coastline thousands of miles from the city that had once threatened to crush me. The air was salty and clean—a stark contrast to the sterile, oppressive atmosphere of that hospital room.

I checked my account—not the one Julian had controlled, but the contingency fund I had been quietly building for years, tucked away behind layers of offshore insulation he never thought to look for. It wasn't billions, but it was enough to ensure that my son would never know the coldness of a room like the one we had left behind.

I picked up a tablet and opened a secure chat. A message waited for me from an unknown contact: “The house is leveled. The debris is being cleared. What is the next phase of the architecture?”

I looked down at my son, who was reaching for a seashell on the balcony table. His eyes—that same piercing blue and amber—tracked my movement with a terrifying, beautiful intelligence.

"The next phase," I whispered to the empty air, "is ensuring that no one ever has to build a legacy on a foundation of blood again."
