Chapter 3 - Maria's Secret and the Digital Trail

The crowd parted as a tall, quiet woman stepped forward from the shadows of the stone colonnade. It was Maria Reyes.

Her dark hair was tied back in a neat bun, and she wore a simple, dignified navy dress. She wasn't trembling. In her hands, she held a sleek, black aluminum laptop bearing the Northstar Systems logo.

Vanessa froze, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror. "Maria... you stay out of this. You signed a non-disclosure agreement!"

"An NDA doesn't cover federal crimes, Mrs. Hart—or whatever your maiden name is," Maria said calmly, walking right up to the altar and stopping beside me. She knelt down, gently scooping little Lily into her arms and pressing a tender kiss to her curls.

Maria looked up at me, her eyes filled with quiet sorrow and fierce loyalty. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, Mr. Ethan. When I found the hidden ledger in your home office safe last week, I didn't know who to trust. Vanessa threatened to have immigration deport my family if I spoke a word. But when I heard Lily crying in the hallway that day, and realized what monsters were playing with your life... I knew I couldn't stay silent."

Maria opened the laptop, her fingers flying across the trackpad with practiced precision. She turned the screen toward the guests and tapped a key.

Instantly, the massive projector screen behind the altar—which was supposed to display a romantic slideshow of Vanessa and me—flickered to life.

Instead of baby photos and romantic vacation shots, a high-resolution financial audit document sprawled across the twenty-foot screen.

“NORTHSTAR HOLDINGS: UNAUTHORIZED OFFSHORE TRANSFERS”

Sub-headers blinked in red text:

Account Holder: Vanessa Hart / Alias: Victoria Sinclair

Destination: Cayman Islands Trust (Beneficiary: Christian Vance)

Total Diverted Funds: $14,250,000.00

Gasps erupted from the crowd like a wave crashing against a cliff. Prominent investors and board members stood up in their chairs, staring at the numbers in absolute horror. Fourteen million dollars, siphoned quietly over the past eight months through shell corporations disguised as charitable foundations.

"Christian Vance..." I whispered, the name clicking into place like a master key. Christian Vance—the charming, silver-tongued financial consultant Vanessa had introduced to me at a charity gala six months ago, claiming he was an old college friend.

Vanessa let out a strangled cry, lunging toward the laptop to slam it shut.

"Get away from that!" she screamed, her face twisted in rage.

Before she could touch the screen, two heavy hands gripped her shoulders. Marcus Vance, my head of corporate security and chief legal counsel, stepped out from behind the stone pillars, his expression as hard as granite.

"It's over, Vanessa," Marcus said, clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs around her delicate, diamond-laden wrists with practiced ease. "The federal marshals have already frozen the Cayman accounts. Christian was picked up at JFK Airport half an hour ago trying to board a one-way flight to Zurich."

Vanessa went limp in Marcus's grip, her designer wedding dress dragging through the dirt as the reality of her total, catastrophic defeat finally crashed down upon her.
