Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room and the Evidence Locker

The sterile white lights of the emergency trauma bay at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital hummed quietly.

Claire woke up four hours later to the steady, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of a fetal monitor. The room was bathed in the soft amber glow of a bedside lamp. Her skin felt cool, slick with lotion, and an IV line ran smoothly into the back of her right hand.

Sitting in the vinyl chair beside her bed, holding her hand with both of his calloused palms, was Ethan. His eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, but the fierce, protective tension in his shoulders relaxed the second he saw her eyelids flutter.

"Hey," Ethan whispered, his voice thick. "Welcome back, little sister."

Claire swallowed, her throat still feeling like sandpaper. "The... the baby?"

"He's fine," Ethan smiled softly, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. "Well, technically it's a boy, according to the OB-GYN who checked him an hour ago. He's stubborn, he has a heart rate like a racehorse, and he gets his stubbornness entirely from his mother. You both gave us quite a scare, Claire."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I couldn't breathe, Ethan. It was so hot... and they just watched me through the glass."

"I know," Ethan said, and the warmth in his voice vanished, replaced by that dark, lethal edge. "I heard the audio feed. Every single second of it."

He reached over and placed a heavy, secure encrypted tablet on her bedside table.

"What's that?" Claire asked.

"That is the Sentinel Ridge forensic evidentiary package," Ethan explained, leaning back. "While the medics were stabilizing you, my tech team executed a remote sweep of Daniel’s home network, smart-home cameras, and cloud storage. We pulled every security camera angle of that backyard. We pulled the audio logs from the kitchen. We pulled three years of text messages where Daniel gaslit you, where Vivian insulted your background, and where Grant threatened your financial independence."

Claire stared at the tablet in disbelief. "You... you got all of that?"

"And more," Ethan said coldly. "We also pulled the property deeds. Did you know the house is technically leveraged under a joint mortgage where Daniel forged your signature on the secondary equity line last winter to pay off his stock market losses?"

Claire’s breath hitched. "No... I thought we owned it clear."

"You did before he touched it," Ethan corrected. "But don't worry about the house, or the mortgage, or Daniel, or his mother. As of two hours ago, my legal team filed an emergency ex-parte petition for a full protective order, immediate physical custody of all assets, and a criminal referral for reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, and domestic abuse with the Fulton County District Attorney."

The hospital room door clicked open.

Dr. Sarah Vance (no relation), the chief of maternal-fetal medicine, walked in holding a clipboard, wearing a warm, reassuring smile.

"Well, Mrs. Harris," the doctor said cheerfully, checking the fetal monitor readout. "Your lab results have stabilized, your core temperature is back to normal, and young Master Harris here is kicking like a soccer player. But you are staying right here under observation for the next forty-eight hours. No arguments."

"Thank you, Doctor," Claire whispered, feeling a profound, overwhelming weight lift off her chest for the first time in three years.

Ethan stood up, kissing her forehead. "Rest, Claire. I’m going back out there. The rats are trying to scurry out of the sinking ship, and I want to make sure the traps are set."
