Chapter 2 - The Flash of the Cuffs

The crystal chandelier above the ballroom seemed to vibrate with the sheer shock of the moment. For three long seconds, the only sound in the room was the heavy, labored breathing of my father, whose chest rose and fell beneath his tailored suit like a surging tide.

Grant’s practiced smirk faltered, his eyes darting from my father’s grim, unyielding expression to the two towering police officers flanking him.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Grant scoffed, shaking his head with an arrogant chuckle that sounded entirely hollow in the tense air. “A domestic dispute? You dragged the police into a family disagreement? Arthur, call your security guards to throw these trespassers out.”

He looked toward his father, Arthur Ashford, expecting the usual nod of absolute patriarchal authority. But Arthur was staring blankly at the badge pinned to the lead officer’s chest, his face draining of all color.

“Mr. Grant Ashford?” the lead officer asked, stepping forward with a heavy, deliberate stride. “I am Officer Miller, Chicago PD. You are being placed under arrest for domestic battery, assault on a pregnant individual, and intentional infliction of severe bodily harm.”

“This is absurd!” Evelyn Ashford shrieked, marching forward with her champagne glass trembling in her manicured hand. “Do you know who we are? The Ashfords built this city! That ungrateful, barren little gold-digger tripped over her own dress while trying to cause a scene! My son didn't touch her!”

Before Officer Miller could respond, my obstetrician, Dr. Harrison, stepped past the police line. He knelt beside me on the floor where I lay clutching my abdomen, his expression a mask of professional fury. He pressed a gloved hand gently against my wrist, checking my pulse, while his other hand recorded the scene on a secure medical tablet.

“I personally heard Mr. Ashford’s explicit threats through the open speakerphone line in my car as I arrived, coupled with the real-time audio feed from the estate’s security hub,” Dr. Harrison announced, his voice ringing loud and clear through the silent ballroom. “Furthermore, I see visible bruising, lacerations from shattered crystal on her hands, and signs of acute trauma. Officer, I am formally documenting this as a direct threat to the life of my patient and her unborn child.”

Grant’s face finally twisted into genuine panic. He stepped back, but Officer Miller’s hand clamped onto his shoulder with inescapable force.

“You have the right to remain silent,” the officer recited, the metallic click of the handcuffs echoing like a gunshot through the hall.

Kelsey, the 22-year-old mistress standing in her silver dress, let out a sharp, terrified gasp. She dropped her small designer clutch onto the floor and tried to back away toward the French doors. “I—I have nothing to do with this! I’m just a guest! Grant told me his wife was crazy and they were already divorced!”

“Stay right where you are, miss,” the second officer instructed, blocking her exit. “Your name and involvement are logged in the digital evidence archive being transmitted directly to the district attorney’s office right now.”

My father knelt beside me, his eyes shining with unsheathed tears as he carefully lifted my head into his lap. “Hold on, my brave girl,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “The ambulance is right outside. You’re safe now. They will never hurt you again.”

As the police hauled a sputtering, cursing Grant toward the grand staircase, and as Evelyn collapsed into a chair in weeping hysterics, I closed my eyes against the pain. The contraction in my stomach subsided just enough for me to whisper into my father’s ear: “Don’t let them touch a single dime of our accounts, Dad. Execute the freeze.”
