Chapter 5 - The Subpoena Storm

The fallout in the legal arena was swift and catastrophic for the Ashford family.

By Tuesday afternoon, the preliminary bail hearing for Grant Ashford turned into a public spectacle. Reporters crowded the courthouse steps, flashing cameras capturing Grant as he was led in wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hair unwashed, his face pale and haggard. The arrogant playboy who had smirked at his pregnant wife was entirely gone, replaced by a terrified, desperate man realizing he had crossed a line with no way back.

Inside courtroom 404, Judge Thomas—a stern, no-nonsense jurist with a reputation for dealing harshly with domestic abusers—sat behind the mahogany bench, reviewing the digital forensic packets submitted by Marcus Vance.

“Mr. Ashford,” Judge Thomas said, his deep voice carrying an unmistakable chill. “The charges against you include domestic battery of an eight-month-pregnant woman, felony assault, and intentional destruction of personal property recorded via verified security systems. Furthermore, the prosecution has submitted undeniable medical evidence regarding your clinical sterility.”

Grant’s head snapped up. He looked toward the defense table where a jittery public defender sat flipping through papers. “That’s... that’s private medical information! It’s irrelevant!”

“It is entirely relevant,” Judge Thomas interrupted sharply, leaning forward. “You used fraudulent paternity claims to justify physical violence against your wife, while simultaneously attempting to extort her signatures on corporate asset transfers under duress. Bail is denied. You will remain remanded in custody until trial.”

“Your Honor, please!” Grant shouted, standing up before his lawyer could pull him back down. “My girlfriend—Kelsey—she’s carrying my child! She’s the mother of the true Ashford heir!”

At the back of the courtroom, Kelsey—who had been subpoenaed as a witness—let out a sharp, indignant squeak. She stood up in the gallery, her designer dress rustling loudly.

“I am not having your baby, Grant Ashford!” Kelsey yelled across the courtroom, pointing an accusing finger at him. “You told me you were a multi-millionaire heir! You told me your divorce was final and you were going to inherit the entire company! Now I find out you’re broke, homeless, and sitting in a jumpsuit? I’m dropping the baby off at your mother’s apartment the second it’s born, and you can pay child support from your prison cell!”

A wave of muffled laughter rippled through the courtroom gallery before the bailiff banged his gavel.

Judge Thomas rubbed his temples, looking at Grant with undisguised disgust. “It appears, Mr. Ashford, that your house of cards has collapsed from every possible angle. Your trial date is set for next month. Good luck.”

As the bailiffs grabbed Grant by the arms and dragged him back toward the holding cells, he locked eyes with me. I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by my father and Marcus Vance, looking radiant, composed, and completely untouchable.

Grant’s lips moved, forming a silent plea for mercy, but I simply turned my head away. He was nothing more than an unpleasant memory.
