Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vales

At two-thirty that afternoon, the financial news networks blew up.

Every cable channel, online news portal, and social media platform was broadcasting the shocking video from the Vale baby shower. The footage was crystal clear: Adrian standing over his pregnant wife, the brutal punch to her belly, her sickening fall into the gift table, and the horrifying sight of Victor and Celeste Vale clapping and drinking champagne as she lay bleeding on the floor.

The public outcry was immediate, massive, and merciless.

Outside the corporate headquarters of Vale Development, hundreds of protesters had already gathered, carrying signs that read #JusticeForMara, #BoycottVale, and #LockUpAdrian. The company’s stock price was in a total freefall, dropping forty-five percent in less than two hours.

Inside the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor, Victor Vale sat at the head of the table, his tie loosened, his face sweat-drenched and pale. Beside him sat Celeste, her hands shaking as she swallowed her third anxiety pill of the afternoon.

"Where is the money?!" Victor screamed at his CFO, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "Why can't we transfer funds from the offshore account?!"

"The offshore account has been frozen by federal marshals, Victor!" the CFO yelled back, tossing a stack of legal notices across the table. "Aegis Capital filed a emergency injunction claiming the funds were derived from fraudulent loan applications! We are completely locked out!"

"What about Adrian's bail?!" Celeste whimpered. "The judge refused bail! They moved him to the county jail! He’s in a cell with real criminals!"

"Forget Adrian!" Victor roared, his eyes wild with terror. "If we don't satisfy Aegis Capital by four o'clock, they take the entire company!"

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

The room fell instantly silent.

I walked into the boardroom, stepping slowly and deliberately in high heels, wearing my dark navy suit. Behind me came Harrison Vance, Naomi, and a team of six Ashford security guards dressed in dark suits.

Victor stared at me, his eyes wide, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Mara...? What are you doing here?! Security, get this woman out of my building!"

None of the building guards moved. In fact, two of them stepped behind Harrison, bowing their heads respectfully.

"They don't work for you anymore, Victor," I said calmly, taking my seat at the head of the table—the seat Victor had occupied for thirty years.

"You can't sit there!" Celeste shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. "That is my husband's chair! You are a gold-digging nobody who seduced my son!"

Harrison stepped forward, opening a thick leather portfolio. "Mrs. Vale, I suggest you restrain your tongue. You are addressing Mara Ashford, sole heir to the Ashford Global Estate, controlling trustee of the Ashford Family Trust, and as of ninety minutes ago, the owner of fifty-one percent of Vale Holdings."

Victor’s face went completely gray. "Ashford...? The... the investment group that bought our debt three years ago?"

"I bought your debt, Victor," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the smooth granite table. "When your hotel empire collapsed in the Caribbean, it was my money that kept you from going to prison for bankruptcy fraud. I let you keep your name on the door. I let your son play CEO. I gave your family every opportunity to show me who you really were."

"Mara... please," Victor stammered, his arrogant posture evaporating in an instant. He slid out of his chair, dropping to his knees on the carpet, his hands clasped together in desperate plea. "We didn't know! If we had known you were an Ashford—"

"If you had known I was rich, you would have treated me with respect," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a icy whisper. "That is the absolute worst part of your rot, Victor. You only treat people like human beings if you think they have power over you."

"Mara, think of the baby!" Celeste cried, running around the table, falling to her knees beside her husband. "She’s a Vale! She carries our blood! You can't destroy her father's legacy!"

I looked down at the two of them—the powerful, arrogant Vale patriarch and his high-society wife—groveling on the floor at my feet, weeping for the money and status they were about to lose.

"My daughter carries my blood," I said firmly. "Her name is Eleanor Ashford. And she will never, ever bear the shameful name of Vale."

I looked at Harrison. "Execute the liquidation."

"With pleasure, Ms. Ashford," Harrison replied.

"No! Please!" Victor screamed as Harrison’s team began handing out foreclosure notices to the board members. "Mara! Have mercy!"

"You offered me fifty thousand dollars and a psychiatric cell twenty-four hours ago, Victor," I said, standing up from the head of the table. "Mercy was never part of your vocabulary. And it is certainly not part of mine."

I walked out of the boardroom, leaving the screams and sobs of the Vale family behind me, echoing into the empty marble halls.
