Chapter 7 - The Final Trial

Three months later.

The high-ceilinged courtroom of the County Superior Court was quiet save for the soft scratch of the court reporter’s machine.

In the defense box sat Adrian Vale. He wore a drab orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists chained to a heavy leather belt around his waist. His hair was cropped short, his face hollowed by ninety days in maximum-security custody, his posture broken and slouched.

Beside him, his court-appointed public defender leaned in, whispering softly. Marcus Sterling had withdrawn from the case two months ago after the Vale family’s accounts were frozen, leaving Adrian with state-funded counsel.

Across the room, I sat at the prosecution table alongside the District Attorney. I was nine months pregnant, my daughter due in less than a week. I wore a simple, elegant ivory dress, a soft cashmere cardigan draped over my shoulders.

"All rise," the bailiff announced as Judge Rebecca Vance stepped up to the bench.

"Please be seated," Judge Vance said, adjusting her glasses as she looked over the final plea documents. "Mr. Vale, you stand before this court convicted of Aggravated Domestic Assault, Battery on a Vulnerable Person, and attempted Extortion. Do you have anything to say before I pronounce sentence?"

Adrian stood up slowly, the iron chains clanking loudly against his orange suit. He looked across the courtroom at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of bitter hatred and profound, hopeless regret.

"I... I made a mistake," Adrian mumbled, his voice raspy. "I was under a lot of stress. My family... we were trying to protect our interests. I didn't mean to hurt Mara. I still love her."

Judge Vance let out a cold, sharp breath from the bench. "Mr. Vale, I have reviewed the video evidence from the baby shower. I have reviewed the financial records of your attempt to coerce your pregnant wife into surrendering her maternal rights. What I saw in that ballroom was not stress. It was unadulterated cruelty, arrogance, and a complete lack of human empathy."

She picked up her pen, marking the sentencing order with heavy, decisive strokes.

"It is the order of this court that you, Adrian Vale, be remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections to serve a term of twelve years at hard labor, without the possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime order of protection is hereby issued, prohibiting you from ever making contact with Mara Ashford or her child."

Gavel slam.

The sharp, heavy thud of the wooden gavel echoed through the courtroom like a closing door.

Adrian collapsed back into his seat, burying his face in his chained hands as two bailiffs stepped forward to drag him back toward the holding cells.

As he was led past my table, he stopped for a split second, looking down at my pregnant stomach.

"Mara..." he whispered, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "Please... let me see her once when she’s born. Just once."

I met his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.

"You had your chance to be a father, Adrian," I said softly. "You chose to be a Vale instead."

The bailiffs yanked him forward, pushing him through the heavy iron door, locking it behind him with a loud, final click.
