Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

That night, the house was silent, save for the hum of the central AC. I was staying in the guest wing of Julian’s mansion—a sprawling, cold fortress that felt more like a tomb than a home.

I waited until 3:00 AM. I knew Julian’s habits; he was a man who required only four hours of sleep. At 3:15 AM, I heard his study door close. He was working.

I crept into the hallway. I didn't head for his study; I headed for the basement. An architect knows that every house has a "nervous system"—the wiring, the vents, the hidden conduits. Using the floor plans I’d snapped earlier, I found the junction box in the pantry.

With a set of precision tools I’d kept in my car—relics of my former career—I bypassed the security system. I wasn't breaking into his computer; I was tapping into his home network.

By 4:00 AM, I was back in my room with a small, discreet signal receiver hidden under my pillow. I began to decrypt the files from his office.

The documents were worse than I had imagined. It wasn't just money laundering. Julian was using the maternity clinic’s specialized, high-privacy services to facilitate illegal surrogacy and trafficking rings for the city’s elite. The "patients" weren't just mothers; they were victims being held under the guise of medical necessity.

Grace’s name appeared in the files. Status: Asset.

I felt bile rise in my throat. He didn't see my daughter as a wife. He saw her as a biological vessel—a way to secure an heir who was statistically "perfect" according to his own twisted medical standards. And the bruising? It was documented in a "disciplinary log."

I began to work. I didn't delete the files—that would alert him. Instead, I began to create "shadow files." I mirrored his entire drive to a secure, cloud-based server that he didn't know existed, and I set a trigger. If the data wasn't "refreshed" by a specific password every 24 hours, it would automatically dump to every major investigative journalist in the state.

I wasn't just dismantling his empire; I was putting a bomb under his seat, and I had the detonator in my hand.
