Chapter 7 - The Operating Room

We didn't reach the exit. We were cornered in the surgical wing by Julian and his private security detail.

"Where do you think you're going, Elena?" Julian sneered, his white coat pristine despite the chaos. "She needs a surgeon. And I am the best one here."

"You’re not touching her," I said, positioning myself between him and Grace.

"Move," he commanded, his hand reaching for the restraint needle in his pocket.

Suddenly, the doors at the far end of the wing burst open. It wasn't the police—it was the press, tipped off by my earlier broadcast, followed by a team of independent paramedics I had bribed earlier that evening to be on "standby" near the facility.

The cameras were rolling. Flashbulbs illuminated the sterile corridor, turning the hospital into a public stage.

"Dr. Vane," a reporter shouted, pushing past a security guard. "We have reports of internal systemic abuse. Are these allegations regarding your patients true?"

Julian froze. He was a man who lived for his reputation; seeing it dismantled in real-time broke his composure. He looked at the cameras, then at me. I was smiling.

"Grace," I whispered, turning to my daughter. "The world is watching. He can't touch you now."

I signaled for the independent medical team. "She needs a C-section," I told the lead paramedic, ignoring Julian’s furious protests. "And he is not allowed within fifty feet of this room."

As the paramedics ushered a trembling Grace into the OR, Julian tried to step forward, but he was blocked by his own board of directors—men and women who had arrived to protect their own assets from the scandal unfolding on live television.

The empire wasn't just crumbling; it was being burned to the ground while the world cheered. I stood in the corridor, watching the doors close, finally breathing for the first time in months. The architect of his downfall had done her job.
