Chapter 3 - The Call That Changes Everything

The hospital room grew quiet as the nurses stepped back to monitor Lily’s steady vitals. I walked out into the sterile white hallway, the linoleum floors reflecting the harsh fluorescent overhead lights. My hands were steady as I pulled my phone from my pocket.
I didn't call Daniel. I didn't call my mother, who would only tell me to keep sweet and protect her precious son-in-law's career.
I dialed a number I hadn't used in five years.
It rang twice before a deep, authoritative voice answered. “Vance Legal Group. This is Harrison Vance.”
“Uncle Harrison,” I said, keeping my voice level, though every nerve in my body hummed with adrenaline.
There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by a sharp intake of breath. “Emily? Is that you? It’s been years. Are you alright? Is Lily...?”
“Lily is in the ICU at St. Matthew’s,” I interrupted, cutting straight to the bone. “And her father just tried to kill her.”
The silence that followed was absolute. When Harrison spoke again, all warmth had vanished from his tone, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of senior trial attorney and managing partner. “Explain. Exactly what happened.”
In concise, chilling detail, I recounted Daniel’s admission on speakerphone, Dr. Bennett’s witness testimony, the diversion of the pharmaceutical drugs to Vanessa Cole, and Daniel’s position as senior pharmacist at the very hospital network where Lily was fighting for her life.
Harrison listened without interrupting once. When I finished, a low, dangerous growl resonated through the receiver.
“He diverted a Schedule-restricted biologic drug intended for a pediatric patient to an unauthorized third party, resulting in a life-threatening medical crisis,” Harrison stated, his mind already calculating charges. “That’s not just civil malpractice, Emily. That’s felony reckless endangerment, healthcare fraud, and depraved indifference. Depending on the hospital’s audit trails, it’s a federal offense.”
“I want him destroyed, Uncle Harrison,” I said quietly, looking through the glass window at my sleeping daughter. “I want his license revoked, I want his assets frozen, I want his mistress investigated, and I want full legal custody of Lily before he even realizes what hit him.”

“Consider it done,” Harrison replied without a second of hesitation. “I’m boarding a private flight to Portland within the hour. I’ll bring a team of forensic accountants and criminal investigators. Don't speak to Daniel, don't speak to hospital HR, and don't sign a single document until I walk through those hospital doors.”
“I’m ready,” I said, and hung up.
