Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Betrayal

While Daniel was being escorted out of the hospital in handcuffs by state investigators, Vanessa Cole was sitting in her sunlit suburban townhouse, frantically refreshing her phone.

She had expected Daniel to handle everything. He had promised her that his wife was a pushover, that the hospital bureaucracy moved too slowly to notice missing inventory, and that her health—and her expensive lifestyle—came first.

Instead, at 9:15 a.m., three unmarked SUVs pulled into her driveway.

State investigators, accompanied by local police, didn't bother knocking politely. They executed a search warrant with practiced efficiency, sweeping through her home and seizing the diverted medication boxes from her kitchen refrigerator, along with her laptop, tablet, and personal phone.

“This is a mistake! I’m a victim here!” Vanessa shrieked as a female officer placed her in zip-tie cuffs on her white leather sofa. “Daniel said the medication was a legal sample! He said his wife didn't need it!”

“Ms. Cole, aiding and abetting the theft of restricted hospital pharmaceuticals and conspiring to commit healthcare fraud are felony charges,” the lead investigator informed her coldly. “You’ll have plenty of time to explain your victimhood to a federal judge.”

Within two hours, Vanessa and Daniel found themselves sitting in adjacent holding cells at the downtown precinct.

When Daniel was pushed into the booking area, his face bruised by the sudden collapse of his reality, he spotted Vanessa across the aisle behind the reinforced glass.

“Vanessa!” Daniel called out, pressing his hands against the partition. “Did you tell them anything? You need to stick to the script! We said it was a clerical error—!”

Vanessa turned around, her face twisted in pure, venomous hatred. The glamorous, sweet assistant persona was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered woman looking out for number one.

“Shut up, you pathetic idiot!” Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. “You told me your wife was weak! You told me you controlled everything! You ruined my life, you arrogant bastard!”

“I did it for you!” Daniel yelled back, panic cracking his voice. “I gave you the drugs so you wouldn't get sick!”

“I don't care about the drugs! I cared about the money and the status, and now I’m looking at ten years in federal prison because of your half-baked schemes!” Vanessa lunged toward the glass, only to be yanked back by a corrections officer. “I’m cooperating with the prosecutor, Daniel! I’m giving them every single text message you ever sent me! I’m telling them how you orchestrated the whole thing!”

Daniel staggered backward, sinking onto the cold metal bench. The realization finally settled over him like a lead weight.

He had lost his job. He had lost his license. He had lost his freedom.

And worst of all, in his blind arrogance, he had handed the weapon that destroyed him directly to his mistress.
