Chapter 6 - The Custody and the Courtroom

The lobby of St. Jude Memorial was usually a place of quiet clinical efficiency, but today it resembled a war zone.

As I stepped out of the private elevator, escorted by two large hospital security guards, I saw him.

Cameron was standing near the main revolving doors, surrounded by three frantic security officers who were desperately trying to block his path. His clothes were filthy, his hair matted, and his eyes bloodshot and wild. Gone was the arrogant, polished attending physician who used to command the emergency room with effortless condescension. In his place stood a desperate, broken shell of a man.

"Amelia!" Cameron screamed, spotting me across the lobby. He thrashed against the security guards, trying to break free. "Amelia, please! You have to talk to me! They're taking everything! The board revoked my license this morning! They're evicting me from our apartment! You can't do this to me!"

The patients and visitors waiting in the lobby stared in shock, whispering behind their hands, pulling out their phones to record the spectacle.

I stopped walking about ten feet away from him, standing tall, my hands resting calmly in the pockets of my white coat.

"Keep your voice down, Cameron," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the marble floor without a trace of hesitation. "You're making a scene in a hospital."

"You ruined my life!" Cameron snarled, his face twisting with ugly, desperate fury as he lunged forward, though the security guards instantly pinned his arms back. "I made you! I gave you a career! And you threw me away like trash for a mistake!"

"A mistake?" I echoed, stepping closer, my eyes locking onto his with terrifying clarity. "Turning off my epidural while I was in excruciating labor with a ten-pound baby wasn't a mistake, Cameron. Forcing natural delivery against clinical indicators because you wanted to punish me for an intern's lie wasn't a mistake. That was premeditated cruelty. That was professional malpractice and spousal abuse."

The crowd in the lobby went dead silent.

Cameron’s breath hitched, the raw fury in his eyes instantly buckling under the weight of undeniable truth.

"I was angry..." he whimpered, his voice cracking as tears spilled over his lower lashes. "I was blind... Please, Amelia. For the sake of our marriage... for the sake of Leo... give me another chance."

"There is no marriage, Cameron," I said quietly, the finality in my words echoing like a falling gavel. "And you will never lay a hand on my son again. The restraining order is permanent. The divorce papers are finalized as of this morning. If you ever come within five hundred feet of me or Leo again, you won't just be dealing with hospital security—you'll be serving time in a federal penitentiary."

Cameron stared at me, his legs finally giving out beneath him. He sank down onto the marble floor, burying his face in his hands, letting out a ragged, broken sob that echoed through the cavernous lobby.

None of the security guards moved to comfort him. None of the onlookers felt pity for him.

They simply watched as a man who had traded his humanity for ego reaped the exact harvest he had sown.

I turned my back on him.

I didn't look back once as I walked back toward the private elevator, leaving the wreckage of my past far behind me.
