Chapter 7 - The Scars We Carry

Six months later.

The spring sun washed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my newly renovated home in the Back Bay of Boston, casting a warm, golden light across the hardwood floors.

I stood in the kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee while watching Leo crawl across the living room rug with ferocious determination, chasing a squeaky plush puppy. He was six months old now—chubby-cheeked, bright-eyed, and overflowing with a joyous, unstoppable energy that filled our home with life and laughter.

Every time I looked at him, I was reminded of the fierce, unyielding will it took to bring him into this world. The scars from that terrifying night in the delivery room were still there—faint, silver lines etched into my skin and deep memories carved into my soul. But they weren't symbols of defeat anymore.

They were battle scars. Proof of survival. Proof that no matter how dark the storm, I possessed the strength to weather it and protect what mattered most.

My phone, resting on the kitchen counter, chimed softly with a calendar notification.

10:00 AM - Board of Directors Meeting: Appointment of Chief Medical Officer.

I smiled to myself, taking a sip of my coffee.

Following my decisive leadership during the internal restructuring of St. Jude Memorial and my continued excellence in emergency trauma care, the hospital board had unanimously voted to promote me to Chief Medical Officer of the entire healthcare system.

I wasn't just surviving anymore. I was thriving. I was building an empire of my own—one rooted in compassion, integrity, and uncompromising strength.

As for Cameron?

The medical board had permanently revoked his license. Stripped of his credentials, his status, and his wealth, he had reportedly moved back to his hometown in upstate New York, living a quiet, isolated existence working a low-level administrative job in a local clinic—a ghost haunting the periphery of the medical world he had once arrogantly commanded.

He was a cautionary tale. A lesson in what happens when a man lets pride destroy the very people who loved him unconditionally.

"Where are you going, little man?" I murmured, walking over to the living room rug and scooping a giggling, wriggling Leo up into my arms.

He squealed with delight, wrapping his tiny, chubby arms around my neck and pressing his soft cheek against mine.

May you like

I breathed in the sweet, powdery scent of baby shampoo, closing my eyes for a fraction of a second to simply soak in the absolute peace of the moment.

The nightmare was over. The deceit of silence had been shattered by the truth. And our new dawn was brighter than I ever could have imagined.
