Chapter 4 - Twelve Years in the Dark

The warmth of the luxury suite felt suddenly freezing.
Mom scrambled backward, pushing me gently behind her protective embrace, her eyes blazing with a mixture of ancient fury, deep trauma, and paralyzing fear.
“Stay away from us,” Mom hissed, her voice vibrating with a dangerous edge I had never heard in my life. She was always gentle, always patient, always sobbing quietly in the bathroom when she thought I couldn't hear. I had never seen her look like a warrior before. “You destroyed our lives once, Nathaniel. You took everything. What could you possibly want with us now?”
Nathaniel stopped instantly, holding up his hands as if facing a wounded animal. “Sarah, please. I didn't know. I swear to you on my life, I had no idea you were living like this.”
“Not know?!” Mom’s voice cracked, sharp and bitter. “Your brother made sure we were erased! Your family threw me out onto the streets with a newborn baby because I wasn't ‘pure-blooded enough’ for the Graves dynasty! You locked yourself in your corporate towers and let your wolves tear my world apart!”
My chest tightened. Brother? Family?
I looked back and forth between Mom and the billionaire who had just promised to save us. Nothing made sense.
“Sarah, listen to me,” Nathaniel pleaded, stepping closer despite her warning glare. “Julian lied to me. Twelve years ago, when you disappeared, Julian told me you took a settlement and left the state voluntarily. He swore you wanted nothing to do with me or the company.”
“Julian lied?!” Mom let out a harsh, broken laugh. “Julian was the one who threatened to have me thrown in prison if I ever contacted you! He had your signature forged on the expulsion orders while you were overseas!”
Nathaniel’s face hardened into a mask of pure, murderous rage. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with an intensity that made Marcus and the security guards step back instinctively.
“Julian,” Nathaniel whispered, the name sounding like a death sentence.
He turned his gaze away from Mom, looking down at me. His eyes softened again, settling on my face with an overwhelming wave of realization.
“Sarah...” Nathaniel’s voice dropped to a choked whisper. “She has your eyes. But... she has my mother’s chin.”
Mom pulled me tighter against her side, her knuckles white. “Don't you dare look at her. You have no right.”
“I’m her grandfather,” Nathaniel said quietly, the words hanging in the air like a heavy anchor dropped into deep water.
The world seemed to spin around me.
Grandfather?
The billionaire whose face was on every financial magazine in the country—the man who owned skyscrapers, shipping lines, and energy grids—was my grandfather?
“We don't want your money, Nathaniel,” Mom said fiercely, her voice trembling as fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. “We don't want your charity, and we certainly don't want your name. We’ve survived twelve years without the Graves empire, and we’ll survive tomorrow. Come on, Ruby. We’re leaving.”
Mom grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the private elevator.
“Sarah, wait!” Nathaniel shouted, taking a desperate step forward.
Before Mom could reach the elevator doors, a loud, chime echoed through the floor, and the private elevator doors slid open once again.

A tall, impeccably dressed man with sharp features and cold, calculating eyes stepped into the suite. It was Julian Graves—Nathaniel’s younger brother and the executive vice president of Graves Energy.
And the moment Julian stepped inside, his smug smile vanished the instant he saw Mom, me, and the tear-stained face of the billionaire CEO standing together.
