Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Traitor

While Mom and I began adjusting to our new life inside the estate, the storm raging within the Graves Energy Corporation was far from over.

Julian Graves’ arrest sent shockwaves through Wall Street. Financial news networks ran non-stop specials detailing the internal coup, the forged documents from twelve years ago, and the sudden emergence of Nathaniel’s long-lost granddaughter.

Three days after the incident, Nathaniel asked Mom and me to join him in his private downtown office.

The atmosphere in the boardroom was tense. Federal investigators, corporate forensic accountants, and senior legal counsel sat around the massive glass conference table.

When we walked in, Julian’s former co-conspirators—several senior vice presidents who had helped bury Sarah’s files twelve years ago—were sitting near the back, looking like men awaiting execution.

“Sit down, Sarah. Sit down, Ruby,” Nathaniel said gently, guiding us to velvet chairs at the head of the table.

Nathaniel stood up, placing both hands flat on the glass surface. His eyes swept across the room with icy precision.

“Twelve years ago,” Nathaniel began, his voice echoing coldly through the room, “this corporation was built on a lie. My brother Julian, aided by several individuals currently sitting in this room, orchestrated the unlawful banishment of my daughter-in-law and the attempted erasure of my granddaughter.”

He pointed a finger toward the trembling executives at the back.

“Federal investigators have recovered your emails, your wire transfers, and your signed complicity agreements. As of this morning, all of you are formally terminated without pension, facing criminal indictments for conspiracy, fraud, and extortion.”

One of the executives stood up, crying out in panic. “Nathaniel, please! We were just following Julian’s orders! If we didn't comply, he would have ruined our careers!”

“You chose ambition over human decency,” Nathaniel replied without a shred of pity. “Security, escort these gentlemen out of my building.”

Within seconds, federal marshals and security guards swarmed the room, hauling the corrupt executives away one by one.

The board room grew deathly quiet.

Nathaniel walked over to us, kneeling beside my chair, and placed a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box in my hands.

“What’s this?” I asked, looking up at him wide-eyed.

“Open it,” he smiled warmly.

I carefully untied the silver ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside rested a small, delicate silver charm bracelet. Hanging from the center was a tiny, intricate silver wallet with a microscopic diamond clasp.

“So you never forget,” Nathaniel whispered, kissing the top of my head, “where our journey began.”
