Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Back inside the grand ballroom of the Royal Palms Plaza, the celebration had completely devolved into a waking nightmare.

The music had been cut off entirely. The multi-tiered wedding cake sat melting under the crystal chandeliers, completely ignored. Guests were clustered in terrified huddles, frantically tapping on their smartphones as news alerts began to push through with terrifying speed.

My father, Arthur Sterling, stood in the center of the reception hall, his face purple with rage and disbelief. His phone was plastered to his ear, his voice cracking as he screamed at his chief financial officer.

“What do you mean the accounts are frozen?!” Arthur bellowed, his veins bulging at his temples. “Call the bank! Tell them I’m personal friends with the board chairman! We have three major commercial developments breaking ground next week—they can't just pull our liquidity!”

“Sir, I’m telling you, it’s coming straight from the top,” the voice on the other end sobbed. “It’s Campbell Holdings. They’ve flagged every single entity associated with your family name. Our credit rating was downgraded to junk status three minutes ago. Our suppliers are pulling out of contracts as we speak!”

The phone slipped from my father’s nerveless fingers, crashing against the marble floor and shattering into a dozen pieces.

Penelope was weeping hysterically on a velvet settee, her designer veil ruined, her brand-new husband, Chad, standing over her with a look of pure disgust.

“You said your family had connections, Penelope!” Chad snarled, ripping his boutonnière off his lapel and throwing it at her face. “You told me your sister was a nobody who married some weird recluse! You didn’t tell me your family just declared financial war against the single most powerful man in the Western Hemisphere!”

“Chad, wait! It was just a joke! Dad just wanted to put her in her place!” Penelope wailed, clutching at his tailored suit jacket.

“Get your hands off me!” Chad shoved her back onto the settee, his face twisted with panic. “My father’s shipping firm relies entirely on Campbell logistics contracts. If Blake Campbell finds out I was standing at this altar while your family abused his wife, my family will disown me before sunrise. Our marriage is annulled. I’m leaving.”

Without a backward glance, Chad stormed out of the ballroom, leaving my sister sobbing uncontrollably into her tulle and lace.

My mother sat rigidly in a corner chair, staring blankly at her diamond wedding ring as if she had suddenly forgotten how it got there. The illusion of perfection they had spent decades building—the high society status, the untouchable wealth, the smug superiority—had been systematically dismantled in less than twenty minutes.

And the architect of their destruction hadn't even raised a fist. He had simply claimed his wife.
