Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Deception

Rachel stood at the edge of the sidewalk, her breathing heavy, her chest heaving as if she had run all the way from Maple Row. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun, and she wore a faded denim jacket, but to me, she was still the most stunning sight in the world.
"Mom," Leo said, stepping back toward her.
Rachel pulled Leo behind her back, using her own body as a shield. She glared at me with fierce, protective fury. "I told you to leave us alone, Marcus. You have your life. You have your wealth. Leave my son out of this."
"He's our son, Rachel," I said evenly, taking a slow step forward.
Rachel’s expression flickered with a mix of shock and agonizing pain. "Don't say that. You gave up the right to call him your son ten years ago when you sent your mother with that check!"
"I didn't send her!" I raised my voice, stepping closer despite her flinching. "I knew nothing about the money! I knew nothing about the threats! I spent ten years believing you walked away from me because you hated who I was!"
Rachel shook her head, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "Lie all you want, Marcus. It doesn't change anything. She brought me bank statements signed by you. She showed me messages from your phone!"
"They were forged!" I reached into my coat pocket. Rachel flinched, but I pulled out the folder Silas had prepared and held it out to her. "Look at it, Rachel. Look at the paper trail. Look at the wire transfers that went right back into my mother's accounts. She framed us both."
Rachel hesitated, her trembling hand reaching out to take the folder. As her eyes scanned the official forensic banking documents and intercepted phone logs, the color drained completely from her face.
"No..." she whispered, her knees buckling.
I caught her before she hit the concrete, my arms wrapping around her waist. For the first time in a decade, I felt her warmth against my chest. She didn't push me away this time; she wept into my shoulder, ten years of built-up grief spilling out all at once.
"She lied to us," Rachel sobbed. "She told me you were going to kill my father... she made me sign papers... I was pregnant, Marcus... I had nowhere to go..."
"I know," I whispered, resting my chin against her head, my eyes burning with lethal intent. "I know. But it's over now. No one will ever hurt you or Leo again."
That evening, the Vance Estate was deathly quiet.
I walked into the grand dining room where my mother sat alone at the head of a thirty-foot mahogany table, sipping wine from a crystal goblet.
"Where are the boys?" she asked calmly, without looking up. "Caleb should be doing his homework."
"Caleb is upstairs," I said, walking to the head of the table. "And Leo is with his mother at a secure safehouse downtown."
Victoria froze, her wine glass stopping inches from her lips. "Marcus... I warned you about—"
"I know everything, Mother," I cut her off, my voice dropping an octave into the terrifying register I used only when ordering executions.
I tossed the forensic folder onto her plate. It knocked over her wine glass, staining the white tablecloth blood-red.
"The Cayman accounts," I continued, pacing slowly around her chair. "The forged signatures. The threats sent to Rachel's father. You tore my life apart. You stole ten years of my son's life."
Victoria stood up, her mask finally slipping, revealing the cold, calculating woman beneath. "I did it to save you!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "That girl was a nobody! A low-class nobody who would have weakened your standing in the underworld! The syndicate needed a ruler, Marcus, not a romantic fool! Look at what you've built! You are the most feared man in the city because of me!"
"No," I whispered, leaning in until my face was inches from hers. "I built this empire to protect the people I love. And you took the only people who mattered away from me."
"I am your mother!" she shrieked.
"Not anymore," I said coldly. Silas stepped out from the shadows near the doorway, accompanied by four heavily armed guards. "Silas, escort her to the estate in Geneva. Strip her of all access to the family accounts. Put her under 24-hour guard. She is never to step foot on American soil again."

"Marcus! You can't do this to me!" Victoria screamed as the guards seized her arms. "I am a Vance! You will ruin this family!"
I didn't even look back as they dragged her out of the room. "The family was already ruined. I'm just rebuilding it."
