Chapter 5 - Lines in the Sand

Word travels fast in the underworld.

When a mafia boss moves his mother out of the country overnight and reshuffles his security detail, the rival syndicates start smelling blood in the water.

The Moretti family—our fiercest rivals in the northern district—had been looking for a crack in my armor for years. And somehow, through leaked rumors or loose-lipped informants, they caught wind of Maple Row.

Two days after my mother was sent away, I was sitting in my safehouse with Rachel and Leo. For the first time in years, I felt a semblance of peace. Leo was sitting on the floor, playing a video game with Caleb, who had taken an instant liking to his older brother. Rachel sat across from me on the sofa, a warm cup of tea between her hands.

"He looks so much like you when he smiles," Rachel murmured, watching Leo laugh at the screen.

"He has your eyes," I replied, taking her hand gently in mine. "And your strength."

Before she could answer, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. It was Silas.

"Boss, we have a breach," Silas’s urgent voice cracked through the line. "A convoy of unmarked SUVs just blew through the perimeter on Maple Row. They think she's still at her old house. It’s Viktor Moretti’s men."

My blood ran cold. "They're targeting her old home?"

"Yes, but that's not all," Silas continued. "A secondary team just cut the power to your safehouse's neighborhood. They tracked your vehicle, Marcus. They're outside!"

BOOM!

A deafening explosion rocked the safehouse. The windows shattered, spraying glass across the living room carpet. Rachel screamed, diving over the boys to cover them with her body.

"Get down!" I roared, drawing my custom silver-plated Kimber .45 from my shoulder holster.

Red emergency lights flickered on inside the house as heavy gunfire tore through the front door. Wood splinters flew through the air as automatic rounds ripped into the walls.

"Marcus!" Rachel cried out, holding both boys tightly beneath the heavy kitchen island.

"Stay down! Don't move!"

I moved with lethal precision, taking cover behind a reinforced pillar. Three armed men clad in tactical gear kicked down the ruined front door, their rifles raised.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Three shots, fired in less than two seconds. All three hit their targets with terrifying accuracy. The hitmen crumpled to the floor.

More footsteps echoed from the back patio. The Morettis had sent a full strike team to eliminate me and take my newfound family as leverage. But they had forgotten who they were dealing with. They thought they were attacking a man softened by sentiment.

They didn't realize that having something to protect made me a thousand times more dangerous.

I slid across the slick marble, picked up an abandoned assault rifle from a fallen gunman, and flanked the secondary team in the hallway. The house erupted into chaotic crossfire, but every movement I made was calculated, relentless, and unforgiving.

Within four minutes, the crossfire ceased. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the smell of spent gunpowder and the soft, panicked breaths of my children.

I dropped the empty magazine, stepped over the debris, and walked back to the kitchen island. Rachel looked up at me, her face pale, her arms wrapped tightly around Leo and Caleb.

I knelt beside them, holstering my weapon, and looked into Leo's wide, terrified eyes.

"Are you okay, son?" I asked gently.

Leo looked at the fallen men in the hallway, then back at me. He didn't flinch. Instead, he reached out his small hand and placed it over mine.

"You saved us," Leo whispered.

"I will always save you," I swore, looking up at Rachel. "All of you."
