Chapter 4 - The Calm Before the Storm

Sunday passed in an eerie, unnatural silence.
Julian spent the afternoon in his home study, ostensibly reviewing “corporate strategy documents,” though I could hear the muffled, conspiratorial hum of his voice whispering on speakerphone through the closed door. I stayed downstairs in the kitchen, calmly baking sourdough bread and organizing my personal financial files into clean, color-coded folders.
When Julian came down for dinner, he wore a mask of affectionate domesticity that made my stomach churn.
“You’ve been awfully quiet today, honey,” Julian said, leaning over the kitchen island and pressing a superficial kiss to the top of my head. “Everything okay?”
“Just thinking about the future, Julian,” I replied evenly, looking up into his hazel eyes with a serene expression. “Wondering where we’ll be a year from now.”
Julian’s smile widened, entirely misinterpreting my words as the vulnerability of an unsuspecting victim.
“Don’t you worry about a thing,” he chuckled, pouring himself a glass of iced tea. “Big changes are coming this week. Good changes. You’re going to see how hard I’ve been working to secure our family's future.”
Our family. The hypocrisy was staggering.
“I’m sure I will,” I said softly, turning back to stir the sauce on the stove.

That night, as Julian slept soundly beside me—breathing the deep, even breaths of a man completely confident in his own deception—I lay awake in the dark, watching the digital clock on the nightstand tick toward Monday morning.
The countdown had begun.
