Chapter 7 - Cynthia’s Desperate Betrayal

Before Julian could recover from the blow, Cynthia Hayes shoved past the edge of the desk, her face twisted in absolute panic.

“This is a setup!” Cynthia shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Julian. “He did this! He’s the one who orchestrated the asset diversion! He told me his wife was a helpless idiot who would never check the paperwork!”

Julian snapped his head around, his eyes locking onto Cynthia with sudden, burning venom.

“You lying bitch!” Julian roared, lunging around the desk toward her. “You were the one who pushed to liquidate the house! You said if we moved fast enough, she’d lose everything before she even hired a lawyer!”

“Gentlemen, please, control yourselves,” Investigator Miller said calmly, stepping smoothly between them and snapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs around Cynthia’s wrists with practiced precision.

As Cynthia shrieked and thrashed against the federal agent, another pair of cuffs clicked firmly around Julian’s wrists.

Julian went completely limp. The arrogance, the smug smiles at the airport, the grand illusions of wealth and superiority—all of it vanished, leaving behind a pathetic, sweating man in an expensive suit staring down the barrel of a federal prison sentence.

“Lauren... please,” Julian choked out, his voice dropping into a desperate, trembling whimper as the federal marshals led him toward the door. “We were married. Have mercy. Think of what this does to us.”

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I simply looked at him with the quiet, detached pity one reserves for a stranger who had tripped on the sidewalk.

“You should have thought about mercy when you planned to destroy my father’s legacy at Denver International Airport,” I said softly.

And with that, the heavy oak doors closed behind them, shutting out the wreckage of a man who had tried to build his kingdom on sand.
