Chapter 3 - The Audit of the Thorne Legacy

While I drifted in the sterile, hazy void of recovery, the machinery of Vance Global was already chewing up the foundations of the Thorne household.

Three floors down from Suite 901, in a private conference room usually reserved for board directors and legal arbitrations, David sat across from Travis and Martha Thorne.

Travis was still shaking, though whether from fury or sudden, creeping terror, he couldn't quite decide. His silk tie was half-unknotted, his hair disheveled from the security guards' grip. Across the polished mahogany table sat two attorneys from Vance Legal, their briefcases open, laying out documents that looked like a death warrant for the Thorne family’s social standing.

"This is completely illegal!" Travis slammed his palm against the table, glaring at David. "My wife stole corporate funds to pay for this ridiculous hospital suite! That $100,000 authorization—I never approved it! I’m going to have her arrested for financial fraud!"

David didn't even blink. He reached slowly into his leather briefcase, pulled out a pristine, black-bound dossier, and slid it across the table.

"Mr. Thorne," David said, his voice flat, rhythmic, and utterly emotionless. "Before you start talking about fraud, let’s review a few items. Item one: the security footage from your foyer timestamped 9:14 a.m. today, showing you stepping over your pregnant wife while she was in active labor, locking her inside the house, and abandoning her."

Travis swallowed hard, his bravado stuttering. "That’s... that’s a domestic dispute. The police won't care about a husband leaving for an errand—"

"Item two," David interrupted, flipping a page in the dossier. "An independent forensic financial audit of Thorne Real Estate Holdings over the past thirty-six months. Specifically, the unauthorized micro-transfers originating from Elara Vance’s pre-nuptial inheritance accounts into your personal speculative trading accounts, totaling precisely $1,420,000."

Martha’s face turned the color of old chalk. She clutched her tweed handbag against her chest as if it were a life jacket in a shipwreck. "That... that’s impossible. Elara signed away her independent claims when she married into this family. She has no financial autonomy!"

"Mrs. Thorne," a female attorney from Vance Legal spoke up for the first time, her voice like shards of glass. "Your daughter-in-law never signed away anything. The pre-nuptial agreement was drafted by Walter Vance’s senior counsel. It explicitly stated that any misappropriation of her private capital by her spouse constitutes an immediate trigger for asset forfeiture, criminal referral, and corporate dissolution."

Travis stared at the documents, his eyes darting frantically across the lines of text. He saw the official Vance Global watermark embossed on every page. The heavy gold crest. The unarguable bank routing numbers.

"No," Travis whispered, shaking his head. "No, no, no. This can't be happening. We have a dinner party with the city council next week! We have loans pending with Meridian Bank! If you freeze our accounts—"

"Your accounts were frozen forty-five minutes ago, Mr. Thorne," David replied smoothly. "Your company credit cards have been declined. Your European sports car parked outside the hospital was repossessed by Vance Logistics five minutes ago because it was purchased using unsecured loans backed by Elara's trust. And as for your position as regional director at Thorne-Mercer... your board of directors received an emergency briefing package thirty seconds before you walked into this room."

Travis lunged forward across the table, his fingers clawing at the edge of the mahogany. "You can't do this! I am a Thorne! We built this city's real estate market!"

"You built nothing, Travis," David said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "You were simply allowed to lease your lifestyle until your rent came due. And today... you’re being evicted."
