Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in the Lobby

Two days later, the discharge papers were signed, sealed, and delivered by a senior partner at Vance Legal.

I was strong enough to sit up, dressed in a soft cashmere lounge set David had retrieved from my private downtown penthouse—the one Travis had never been allowed to visit, because he believed it belonged to an anonymous corporate portfolio.

As the private elevator descended from the ninth floor toward the ground lobby, the smooth, silent glide of the cabin felt symbolic. I wasn't the trembling woman crawling across a marble foyer floor anymore. I was Elara Vance. And the bill for three years of psychological abuse, financial extortion, and physical endangerment was finally coming due.

When the elevator doors slid open into the main lobby of the private wing, the first person I saw was Travis.

He looked like a man who had aged ten years in forty-eight hours. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, his eyes bloodshot and frantic. He had been camping out in the public seating area, harassing hospital staff, trying every desperate angle to regain entry to the upper floors.

When he saw me step out of the private elevator flanked by David and two armed private security guards—with two nurses wheeling the twin bassinets behind us—his face contorted into a mask of pure, unbridled fury.

"Elara!" Travis shouted, lunging forward past the reception desk.

The security guards moved instantly, forming a living wall of steel between him and my children. Travis slammed against their outstretched arms, his voice cracking with desperate rage.

"What is this?! Where are you taking my children?! You can't just take them! You’re my wife!"

I stopped walking. I turned my head, looking down at him with the exact same cold, expressionless gaze he had given me while I lay bleeding on the marble floor of our foyer.

"I am not your wife, Travis," I said clearly, my voice carrying across the silent, polished lobby. "As of ten minutes ago, my legal team filed an emergency petition for absolute divorce based on physical endangerment, financial fraud, and abandonment during medical crisis. The temporary restraining order was signed by Judge Holloway twenty minutes ago."

Travis froze, his mouth hanging open. "Divorce? You can't divorce me! We have a life together! We have—"

"You have nothing," I interrupted, stepping closer to him while maintaining a safe, untouchable distance. "No home. No job. No car. No credit. The penthouse you live in has already been seized by the primary mortgage holder—which happens to be a shell company owned by Vance Global. You have forty-eight hours to clear your personal belongings out of the guest house before the locks are changed and the wrecking ball moves in."

Martha, who had been sitting hunched over in a corner chair wrapped in a dark trench coat, suddenly surged forward, her face twisted in absolute venom.

"You ungrateful, scheming little b:itc:h!" Martha screamed, pointing a shaky, manicured finger at me. "You trapped my son! You tricked us into thinking you were some poor nobody from a broken home while all along you were plotting to destroy our family name! I’ll ruin you! I’ll make sure no one in this city ever—"

"Mrs. Thorne," a calm, chilling voice echoed from behind me.

Grandpa Vance stepped out of the private elevator, leaning heavily on his silver-knobbed walking stick, his eyes fixed on Martha with the crushing weight of an apex predator.

Martha’s hand dropped instantly. The color drained from her face as she recognized the man she had mocked at country club dinners as a 'retired shipping clerk.'

"Walter... Walter Vance?" Martha whispered, her voice trembling into a pathetic squeak.

"The very same," Grandpa Vance said, stepping up beside me and placing a protective hand on my shoulder. "You spent three years treating my granddaughter like a servant in her own home. You mocked her heritage, you encouraged your spineless son to abuse her, and you thought you could throw her children away like trash to fund your social ambitions. Well, Mrs. Thorne... welcome to the real world."

Grandpa Vance turned to David with a brief nod.

"Serve them the final notices," Grandpa commanded. "And make sure every single creditor in the tristate area knows that Thorne Real Estate is officially bankrupt."
