Chapter 4 - Ambush at the Homestead

While Andrew was being processed downtown, Detective Reynolds drove me back to my neighborhood under the pretense of retrieving clothes for Katie. In reality, we were walking into the climax of Barbara’s grand design.

As our unmarked cruiser turned down the oak-lined street, I saw it: three luxury sedans parked along the curb in front of my house. Through the bay windows, I could see Barbara moving briskly through the living room, directing caterers who were unloading silver trays and floral arrangements. Tomorrow was her birthday, but tonight was supposed to be the celebration of her ultimate victory—the eradication of my independence.

Reynolds parked a few houses down. "We have units stationed at the rear and side exits," he instructed, adjusting his radio. "Let her walk right into her own trap."

I walked up the front steps, my key sliding smoothly into the lock. The door swung open, releasing the rich scent of roasting garlic and expensive perfume.

"Amanda!" Barbara’s voice rang out from the kitchen before she even rounded the corner. "Finally! Where is Andrew? Did you leave him at the hospital with that child? Honestly, your priorities are appalling. Put your bag down and start basting the chicken—the real estate agent is coming by at eight in the morning to collect the final keys, and I want this place spotless before the guests arrive."

She stepped into the hallway, wiping her hands on a linen apron, her expression hardened into a permanent mask of condescension. Then she saw me standing there without bags, and behind me, stepping through the doorway with a badge gleaming in the dim light, Detective Reynolds.

Barbara froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin looking like curdled milk.

"What is this?" she whispered, her voice dropping its imperious tone for something high and thin. "Who are you? What are you doing in my house?"

"It’s not your house, Barbara," I said, stepping past her into the foyer. "And Andrew isn't coming home tonight. He’s currently sitting in a holding cell downtown, answering questions about why our ten-year-old daughter was pushed into the path of a moving car."

Barbara staggered backward, her hand flying to her chest as if she had been struck physically. "You're lying," she choked out, her eyes darting wildly toward Reynolds. "That’s a lie! Andrew would never—he’s a good boy! He loves his family!"

"He loves your approval, Barbara," Reynolds said, stepping forward and placing a heavy folder on the entryway console. "And he loves the idea of liquidating assets that don't belong to him. We have the forged power of attorney right here, along with bank routing numbers pointing straight to your offshore accounts. The real estate agent has already been notified, and the sale is canceled permanently."

Barbara let out a sharp, guttural gasp, her knees buckling as she collapsed onto the mahogany bench against the wall. The queen of the household, defeated not by an army, but by the simple, unyielding truth of a mother who refused to break.
