One year later, the morning sun poured through the bay windows of the kitchen, warming the hardwood floors that my father’s hands had helped lay down decades ago.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pancakes filled the air. Outside, in the front yard, the oak trees rustled in a gentle summer breeze. There were no frantic phone calls, no demands for obedience, no secret plots unfolding behind my back. There was only peace.

Katie bounded down the stairs, her backpack slung over one shoulder, her sneakers squeaking rhythmically against the floorboards as she practiced a clumsy little leap right in the middle of the hallway.

"Watch out, Mom!" she giggled, executing a near-perfect cartwheel that landed with a soft thump on the living room rug. "I'm ready for gymnastics class!"

I set her lunchbox on the counter and smiled, watching her sprint out the front door toward the school bus idling at the corner. She didn't look back with fear; she ran forward with her head held high, all elbows, ribbons, and stubborn little goals.

I stood on the porch, watching the yellow bus pull away down the sunny street. The air was crisp and sweet, carrying the promise of a brilliant new day. I locked the front door behind me—my door, my home, my life—and for the first time in my life, I knew exactly who I was.
