Chapter 5 - Her Untold Secret

Three days later, Mateo walked into Lorenzo’s private study on the second floor, carrying a thick yellow folder stamped with a red CONFIDENTIAL seal.

Lorenzo was sitting behind his heavy mahogany desk, reviewing financial reports for his shipping lines at the Port of Newark.

“Boss,” Mateo said, setting the folder down on the dark wood. “The deep background check on Hunter Vance just came through from our private investigators in West Virginia.”

Lorenzo set his pen down, his eyes narrowing. “Is there something wrong?”

“Not wrong, Boss,” Mateo replied, his face unusually grim. “Just... unexpected. Her name isn't Hunter Vance.”

Lorenzo’s hand tightened into a fist on the desk. “Explain.”

Mateo opened the folder, sliding a series of black-and-white photographs across the blotter.

“Her real name is Hunter Cross,” Mateo revealed. “She’s twenty-four. Born in a small coal-mining town near Wheeling, West Virginia. Her father was a mechanic. But her late fiancé... his name was Daniel Vance.”

Lorenzo picked up a photograph of a young, handsome man in a dark leather jacket, smiling beside a glowing, younger Hunter.

“Who was Daniel Vance?” Lorenzo asked, his tone dropping into a dangerous growl.

“He was an undercover detective for the New York Police Department’s Organized Crime Task Force,” Mateo said quietly. “Six months ago, Daniel Vance was assigned to infiltrate an illegal gambling ring run by the Moretti family in Brooklyn.”

Lorenzo froze. “The Morettis?”

“Yes,” Mateo confirmed. “Daniel found out too much. He uncovered the blueprints for the car bomb that was built to target your wife, Sophia. Before he could turn the evidence over to federal prosecutors, Don Carmine Moretti found out he was a cop.”

Mateo pointed to an old newspaper clipping inside the folder.

“They staged a fake burglary at Daniel’s home in West Virginia,” Mateo continued, his voice heavy with grim reality. “They shot him on his front porch while Hunter was inside the house, four months pregnant. The trauma caused her to go into premature labor weeks later.”

Lorenzo stood up slowly, staring at the photograph of Hunter.

The pieces of the puzzle fell into place with terrifying clarity.

Hunter hadn't come to his mansion by accident. She hadn't applied for a housekeeping job at the Rossi estate out of random luck. She was hiding from the same monsters who had murdered her husband and stolen her child.

“Does she know who I am?” Lorenzo asked, his voice barely a whisper. “Did she come here seeking revenge?”

“No, Boss,” Mateo said firmly. “I checked her search history, her bank records, her phone logs. She had no idea the Rossi family was connected to the Moretti war. She chose this estate because it was heavily guarded, secluded, and paid cash under the table. She was just a terrified girl trying to find a corner of the world where Carmine Moretti couldn't find her.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes, taking a deep, ragged breath.

A profound, aching weight filled his chest.

This girl—this quiet, beautiful woman who was currently upstairs singing old country lullabies to his son—had lost her husband to the exact same bomb plot that had taken his wife. They were two casualties of the same war, brought together by a twist of destiny that seemed almost divine.

Lorenzo opened his eyes, his dark gaze burning with an absolute, unshakeable resolve.

“Burn the file, Mateo,” Lorenzo commanded.

Mateo blinked. “Boss?”

“Burn it,” Lorenzo repeated, his voice cold as steel. “Her real name dies in this room. She is Hunter Vance. She is the savior of my son. And if Don Carmine Moretti so much as breathes her name... I will burn Boston and New York to the ground to wipe his family off the map.”

Lorenzo walked past Mateo, heading straight for the stairs toward the master nursery.

When he opened the door, the room was bathed in the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun.

Hunter was sitting in the wooden rocking chair by the window, wearing a soft ivory sweater, gently rocking baby Leo. The baby was fast asleep, his small head resting securely against her collarbone, his breathing slow and peaceful.

Hunter looked up as Lorenzo walked in. She smiled—a small, genuine, beautiful smile that reached her eyes for the very first time since she had arrived in his house.

“He drank four ounces, Lorenzo,” she whispered happily. “The doctor said he gained three whole ounces of weight since yesterday.”

Lorenzo stopped beside the rocking chair. He looked down at her—at her dark hair glowing in the sunlight, at her pale skin, at the incredible strength hidden beneath her soft frame.

He knelt beside the chair, taking her small, warm hand in his.

“Hunter,” Lorenzo murmured, his voice thick with a raw, fierce devotion.

“Yes?” she asked, looking at him in surprise.

“You will never have to run again,” Lorenzo promised, pressing his lips against the back of her fingers. “Do you hear me? Never again.”

Hunter looked into his eyes, sensing that he knew something she hadn't told him, but in his dark, protective stare, she found a sense of safety she hadn't felt in six long months.

She squeezed his hand back, tears rising in her eyes. “I know, Lorenzo. I know.”
