Chapter 9 - From Darkness to Fire

A month passed.

Summer arrived in New York, bringing warm breezes, blue skies, and blooming hydrangeas along the cliffs of the Long Island estate.

The dark clouds that had hung over the Rossi mansion for years were completely gone.

Baby Leo was now four months old—a chubby, happy, healthy infant who laughed constantly, loved playing with his squeaky rubber duck, and was slowly transitioning to solid baby foods and organic doctor-approved formula. His digestive system had completely recovered.

Hunter sat on the sunlit terrace, packing her small canvas bag.

She had placed her three old t-shirts, her mother’s photograph, and her modest personal belongings back into the faded bag.

Her job was done.

Leo was safe. The enemies were gone. He no longer needed her milk to survive.

She looked out over the ocean, tears filling her eyes. She loved Leo with every fiber of her being. She loved Lorenzo with a fierce, burning passion that terrified her. But she was still, in her heart, a girl from West Virginia who had entered this house as a maid. She felt she didn't belong in a kingdom of gold and marble.

She picked up her bag and walked quietly toward the front gates.

It was five o’clock in the morning. The sun was just peeking over the horizon.

She reached the massive iron gates, setting her hand on the latch.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

A deep, commanding voice rang out across the quiet driveway.

Hunter turned around.

Lorenzo was walking down the stone driveway toward her. He wasn't wearing his suit. He wore a simple black t-shirt and jeans, his hair windswept, his dark eyes blazing with an intense, desperate fury.

“Lorenzo...” Hunter whispered, holding her bag tight. “Leo is healthy now. He’s eating formula. You don't need a wet nurse anymore.”

Lorenzo stopped two feet from her. He looked at the cheap canvas bag in her hand, then looked up into her face.

“You think I kept you here because of milk?” Lorenzo spat, his voice trembling with an emotion he could no longer hold back.

“Lorenzo, I’m a maid—”

“Shut up,” Lorenzo growled, taking a massive step forward and grabbing her canvas bag, throwing it casually into the bushes.

“Hey!” Hunter cried out.

Before she could protest, Lorenzo grabbed her by her waist, pulling her flush against his body, lifting her two inches off the stone drive.

“You healed my son, Hunter,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking as he looked down into her wide, beautiful eyes. “You saved his life. But what you don't realize... is that you saved mine too.”

Hunter’s breath caught in her throat.

“I was dead before you walked into that nursery,” Lorenzo confessed, his scarred face tortured with honest vulnerability. “I was a monster waiting to drown in my own blood. You brought light back into this house. You brought love back into my heart.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, snapping it open.

Inside sat a breathtaking ten-carat oval diamond ring, flanked by two blue sapphires that matched the color of her eyes.

“You are not leaving this house, Hunter Vance,” Lorenzo declared, his tone leaving zero room for argument. “You are not a maid. You are not a guest. You are the woman I love. You are the mother of my son. And you are going to be my wife.”

Hunter stared at the brilliant diamond, then looked up at the man who had torn down an entire underworld empire to protect her.

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over her lashes.

“You’re crazy, Lorenzo Rossi,” she sobbed softly, laughing through her tears.

“I am completely insane about you,” Lorenzo murmured, sliding the diamond onto her finger before capturing her lips in a deep, passionate, breathless kiss that wiped away every memory of pain, loss, and darkness.
