Chapter 8 - The Rain on Pier 8

The rain returned with a vengeance by 3:00 AM, turning the concrete loading docks of Pier 8 into a slick, black mirror reflecting the amber glow of towering industrial cranes.

Three unmarked black SUVs coasted down the pier with their headlights off, coming to a silent halt beside a stack of empty shipping containers. Doors flew open, and six armed men in tactical gear poured out into the freezing downpour, weapons raised as they moved with military precision toward the central warehouse.

They didn't know the building was empty. They didn't know the shipping manifests they had stolen off Aleandro’s desk were elaborate fictions designed to draw them into a kill zone.

As the Vanguard operatives breached the side steel door of the warehouse, the heavy iron security gates behind them dropped with a deafening, metallic slam.

"Ambush!" a voice screamed from the darkness inside.

Before the tactical team could raise their rifles, the overhead halogen floodlights clicked on with blinding intensity, illuminating every corner of the vast, cavernous warehouse. From the catwalks above, twelve Moretti enforcers stepped out of the shadows, their weapons locked and loaded, pointing straight down at the trapped men.

And stepping out from behind a stack of wooden crates in the center of the floor was Aleandro Moretti.

He wasn't wearing a tactical vest. He wore his charcoal overcoat, his collar turned up against the wind, his hands resting calmly in his pockets as he walked toward the center of the warehouse.

The leader of the Vanguard team—a scarred, heavy-set ex-mercenary named Miller—slowly lowered his rifle, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that they had walked directly into the jaws of a trap.

"Moretti," Miller snarled, wiping rain from his forehead. "You think you're smart, don't you? You think wiping us out stops the investigation? The federal prosecutor has copies of everything—every shipment, every wire transfer, every word spoken in your office over the last three months!"

Aleandro stopped ten feet away, his dark eyes devoid of any fear, carrying only the absolute weight of a king reclaiming his castle.

"The federal prosecutor has nothing," Aleandro said softly, his voice cutting through the hollow roar of the rain outside. "Because the listening device you planted was broadcasting whatever I wanted it to broadcast. And Julian Cross is currently enjoying the hospitality of my vineyard basement, rethinking his career choices."

Miller’s face turned gray. "You son of a bitch..."

"You made a mistake," Aleandro continued, taking another step forward. "You thought you could use a desperate woman to break into my house. You thought you could play chess with a man who owns the board."

He raised his hand and gave a single, imperceptible nod.

The warehouse erupted. In less than ten seconds, the tactical team was disarmed, zip-tied, and forced to their knees on the cold concrete floor.

Aleandro didn't look at them as they were dragged away. He turned his collar up against the rain and walked out toward his waiting car, knowing the hardest part of the night was still waiting for him back at the estate.
