Chapter 9 - The Confession Behind the Glass

The study was dark when Aleandro unlocked the front door at 5:00 AM.

He didn't turn on the lights. He walked straight across the Persian rug and stood by the desk, peeling off his wet overcoat and tossing it onto the leather armchair. The house was dead silent, save for the grandfather clock ticking steadily in the hallway.

Then the study door opened.

Isabella stood on the threshold. She was wearing her silk robe, her hair tangled around her shoulders, her face pale as ghost-linen. She had been sitting up all night, waiting for the news—waiting for the inevitable moment when the world she had built on lies would finally collapse around her.

"You're back," she whispered, her voice trembling so violently she had to grip the edge of the doorframe to stay upright.

"I'm back," Aleandro said.

She took a slow, hesitant step into the room, her dark eyes scanning his face for any sign of blood, of fury, of mercy. Finding none, her knees finally gave out. She sank to the floor right there by the desk, burying her face in her hands, and began to sob—not the quiet, controlled crying of a woman trying to hide her secrets, but the gut-wrenching, broken wails of someone whose soul had finally been ripped open.

"I had no choice," she choked out, the words spilling through her fingers like broken glass. "They came to me four months ago... they said David was going away for thirty years... they said if I didn't help them, I'd never see him again... I'm sorry, Aleandro, God, I'm so sorry..."

Aleandro didn't move. He stood looking down at her, the woman he had planned to marry, the woman who had shared his bed while plotting his downfall.

"You went to them," Aleandro said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "Before they even came to you, you walked into their office."

Isabella froze, her hands dropping from her face. She looked up at him, horror dawning in her eyes. "How... how do you know that?"

"I spoke with your brother yesterday," Aleandro said. "He told me everything. And I spoke with Julian Cross in my basement."

Isabella shrank back against the desk leg, looking at Aleandro like he was a stranger—a monster she had accidentally invited into her life. "Are they... are they dead?"

"Your brother is on a private plane heading out of the country right now," Aleandro said flatly. "Clean record. A fresh start. Exactly what you traded my life to buy him."

Isabella stared at him, tears streaming freely down her cheeks, her chest heaving. "Then why didn't you kill me? Why am I still breathing?"

Aleandro walked slowly around the desk, stopping just inches from where she sat crumpled on the floor. He crouched down, bringing himself to her eye level—the exact same posture he had used with Emma three nights ago.

"Because I know what it's like to do terrible things for family," Aleandro whispered, his voice cracking slightly for the first time all night. "Fifteen years ago, I pulled a trigger to protect my sister when nobody else would. I understand the math of survival, Isabella."

She stared at him, her lower lip trembling. "Does this mean... can we fix this?"

Aleandro stood up slowly, stepping back into the shadow of the oil painting hanging on the wall.

"No," he said, his voice entirely absolute. "The wedding is canceled. The guards outside will escort you to the airfield by sunrise. Your passport is on the hall table, along with enough money to start a new life anywhere you choose."

Isabella opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She knew better than to argue with a king who had already handed down his sentence. She had kept her brother alive, but she had lost everything else.

As she stood up, brushing the dust from her robe, she walked slowly toward the door without looking back. When the heavy oak door clicked shut for the final time, the office grew colder than it had ever been before.
