Chapter 4 - The Ghost Awakens

Hours later, deep in the subterranean tactical command center of the estate, the glowing monitors mapped out the silent snow-covered perimeter. The threat from the Miller crew had been neutralized before they even crossed the property line—a brief, bloody skirmish handled by Reed's elite enforcers that left the rivals scrambling back into the freezing night with broken bones and a harsh lesson in territory.

Reed walked back up the spiral iron staircase into the sterile, quiet warmth of the estate's private medical suite.

Dr. Marcus Vance sat at a small desk in the corner, reviewing a digital chart on a tablet. He looked up as Reed pushed open the heavy wooden door.

"Her fever broke about twenty minutes ago," Marcus reported quietly. "The broad-spectrum antibiotics are clearing the infection in her lungs. She’s resting naturally now, but she’s deeply weak. Her body simply crashed from prolonged physical exhaustion, poor nutrition, and chronic stress."

Reed walked past the doctor and stepped up to the side of the hospital bed.

Clara lay against crisp white pillows. The harsh, sickly pallor of her skin had faded slightly, replaced by a pale, natural tone. Without the tension of daily survival pulling at her features, she looked remarkably like the girl he had loved fourteen years ago—softer, younger, yet carrying the unmistakable marks of a hard life etched around her eyes and mouth.

Why had she run? Why had she never reached out to him?

He remembered the night he chose the underworld. He had told her to leave Chicago, to go somewhere safe where the blood on his hands could never splatter on her. He had cut all ties deliberately, brutally, believing that keeping her away from his rising empire was the only way to keep her alive.

Yet, looking at her now, he realized the bitter irony: while he had built a fortress to protect himself from the world, she had spent fourteen years fighting a brutal, invisible war all on her own, raising his children in the shadows of the city he supposedly ruled.

A soft groan escaped Clara’s lips. Her eyelids fluttered, trembling against the harsh light of the room.

Reed froze, his breath catching in his throat.

Slowly, Clara’s brown eyes opened. They were hazy, disoriented, blinking against the unfamiliar white ceiling. She tried to turn her head, but a wisp of a cough caught in her throat.

Reed immediately stepped closer, pouring a small paper cup of water from the bedside pitcher. He slid one large hand gently beneath her shoulders, lifting her just enough, and pressed the rim of the cup to her dry, cracked lips.

"Drink slowly," he murmured, his voice thick with emotions he hadn't processed in a lifetime.

Clara drank eagerly, the cool water reviving her. As she finished, she lowered her head back against the pillow and focused her gaze on the man leaning over her.

At first, her eyes were blank with feverish confusion. Then, recognition struck. Her breath hitched, and the color drained completely from her face.

"Reed..." she whispered, her voice a fragile, terrified rasp. She tried to pull away, her fingers clawing weakly at the sheets. "No... please... how did you find us? Stay away from us..."
