Chapter 9 - The Healing of Wounds

Down in the reinforced panic shelter beneath the library, the heavy steel blast doors swung open with a hydraulic hiss.
Clara sat on a plush velvet sofa inside the secure room, holding Sully and Mia tightly against her chest. When she heard the gunfire echoing faintly through the concrete walls, her heart had felt like it was going to burst from terror. She had spent fourteen years running from this exact kind of violence—the blood, the guns, the invisible wars fought in the dark.
And yet, here she was, sheltered in the heart of the monster's lair, realizing that the monster had built his entire empire to ensure that nothing could ever reach her inside these walls.
Footsteps approached. Heavy, measured, and familiar.
Clara looked up as Reed walked through the open doorway. He had removed his blood-splattered tactical vest, carrying it over one arm. His black dress shirt was slightly rumpled, his hair damp from the melting snow, and a faint scratch marked his jawline—the only visible sign of the battle outside.
"Is it... is it over?" Clara asked, her voice trembling as she stood up slowly, keeping the twins behind her skirts.
"It's over," Reed said, his voice dropping into that gentle, grounding register he reserved only for them. He tossed the vest onto a nearby chair and walked toward her. "The perimeter is secure. No one will ever breach those gates again."
Sully peeked out from behind Clara, his eyes wide with awe. "Did you fight them all off?"
Reed knelt down, looking at the boy. "Every last one of them. Because nobody touches my family. Do you hear me?"
Mia ran forward, bypassing her brother, and threw her arms around Reed’s neck. Reed froze for a fraction of a second—unused to unvarnished, innocent affection—before slowly wrapping his arms around the little girl, holding her close against his chest.
Clara watched them, a heavy tear spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheek. All the resentment, the fear, and the anger she had carried for fourteen years melted away in the warmth of that single moment. She saw a man who had sacrificed his soul to the underworld, yet had kept one small, sacred corner of his heart entirely preserved for the people he loved.
Reed stood up, gently setting Mia down, and stepped closer to Clara. He reached out, his warm calloused fingers cupping her cheek, wiping away her tear with a tenderness that defied everything he was.

"I'm sorry I left you, Clara," Reed whispered, the confession tearing itself from the deepest chambers of his soul. "I thought I was saving you."
"You did save us, Reed," Clara whispered back, resting her hand over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm beneath his shirt. "You just took fourteen years to finish the job."
