Chapter 5 - The War for Sophie

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news had hit the international media like a tidal wave.
“HALE EMPIRE IN TURMOIL: BILLIONAIRE ACCUSED OF CHILD ABDUCTION!” “STOLEN SURROGACY FRAUD AT SAINT AURELIA CLINIC!” “THE WAITRESS AND THE BILLIONAIRE: WHO IS SOPHIE HALE’S TRUE MOTHER?”
Headlines flashed across television screens in London, Paris, and Zurich. Photos of Evelyn Hart leaving the restaurant in Victor’s motorcade were plastered across every major social media platform.
Inside the heavily fortified private estate of the Hale family on the shores of Lake Geneva, the mood was tense.
Dozens of elite private security guards patrolled the iron perimeter walls. In the master living room, Julian Mercer stood before a wall of monitors, barking orders to a team of fifteen corporate attorneys via video link.
Evelyn sat on the carpet near the glass patio doors, watching Sophie play with a wooden dollhouse. She had changed into clean clothes—a soft grey sweater and dark trousers provided by the estate staff—but the dark circles beneath her eyes revealed she hadn't slept a single minute.
Victor entered the room, holding two cups of fresh coffee. He walked over and handed one to Evelyn, sitting down on the rug beside her.
“How are you holding up?” he asked gently.
Evelyn took a sip of the warm coffee, her hands steady now. “I’ve spent two years believing I was broken, Victor. I spent two years thinking my body failed to keep my baby alive. Knowing the truth… knowing that she is here, that she is healthy, and that she remembers me… it makes the media storm feel like nothing.”
Victor looked at her with growing admiration. Most people would have crumbled under the weight of a global scandal involving the wealthiest families in Europe. But Evelyn possessed an unbreakable inner strength—a mother’s resolve that was far more powerful than his billions.
“Julian just received a formal notice from the high court,” Victor informed her. “Arthur Sterling has leveraged his political connections to freeze my personal bank accounts in Switzerland.”
Evelyn looked at him sharply. “Can he do that?”
“He can freeze the Swiss accounts temporarily,” Victor smiled faintly, a dangerous glint in his eye. “Which only leaves me with my accounts in London, Singapore, New York, and the Cayman Islands. Sterling is playing a game he doesn't understand.”
Julian walked over to them, his face grave. “Victor, we have a bigger problem. Sterling didn't just freeze the accounts. He’s filed for immediate protective custody of Sophie on behalf of the Swiss Child Welfare Agency, citing an ongoing human trafficking investigation against Saint Aurelia.”
Evelyn stood up instantly, her voice rising in panic. “They want to take her to an orphanage?”
“They want to place her in a ‘neutral state facility’ while the trial takes place,” Julian corrected. “Which means Sterling’s allies in the local agency will control access to her.”
“Over my dead body,” Evelyn declared, stepping between Sophie and the window.
“They’re arriving at the main gates right now,” Marcus announced from the door, holding a tactical radio. “Three police vehicles, accompanied by two representatives from the Child Protective Agency and Arthur Sterling’s head attorney.”
Victor stood up slowly, unbuttoning his dark suit jacket to reveal the cold authority beneath.
“Julian,” Victor said, “open the main gates.”

Julian blinked. “Victor, if we let them on the property—"
“Let them in,” Victor repeated calmly. “It’s time to end this show.”
