Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Gates

The iron gates of the Hale estate swung open with a heavy, hydraulic groan.

Three white police sedans and a luxury black sedan pulled up the long gravel driveway, coming to a halt in front of the grand stone portico.

A tall, grey-haired man in an expensive navy coat stepped out of the black sedan. It was Arthur Sterling himself, flanked by his chief legal council and two uniform Swiss police officers.

Victor stood on the top step of the portico, his hands in his pockets, flanked only by Marcus and Julian. Evelyn stood just inside the glass doors behind him, holding Sophie securely in her arms.

“Victor!” Arthur Sterling called out, walking up the steps with an arrogant smile. “I see you’ve turned your estate into a armed bunker! Quite dramatic, even for you.”

“Arthur,” Victor replied flatly, not moving an inch. “You’re trespassing.”

The police captain stepped forward, holding a legal document. “Mr. Hale, we have a federal warrant issued by the Geneva Magistrate to place the child, Sophie Hale, into temporary protective custody pending the outcome of the surrogacy fraud investigation.”

Arthur Sterling leaned in, his voice laced with venomous satisfaction. “Give it up, Victor. Your mother was a criminal. She stole a child from a penniless waitress. You have no legal standing as a father, and the publicity alone will strip you of the Hale chairmanship by Monday.”

Victor looked at Arthur Sterling for five long, silent seconds. Then, he let out a short, quiet laugh.

“You really thought my mother acted alone, didn't you, Arthur?” Victor asked softly.

Sterling’s arrogant smile flickered slightly. “What are you talking about?”

Victor pulled a red leather folder from under his arm and tossed it onto the hood of Sterling’s luxury sedan.

“That folder contains the secondary financial records retrieved from Dr. Keller’s villa last night,” Victor stated, his voice ringing clearly across the courtyard so the police officers could hear every word. “It details eighteen separate illegal fertility procedures conducted at Saint Aurelia over the last five years.”

Sterling’s face paled. “That’s forged nonsense!”

“And four of those procedures,” Victor continued relentlessly, stepping down one marble stair, “were performed on behalf of Sterling Pharmaceuticals to harvest illegal genetic material for your firm’s private longevity research program.”

The police captain turned his head sharply, staring at Arthur Sterling.

“My mother was guilty of desperation,” Victor said, pointing a finger at Sterling’s chest. “But you, Arthur… you built an international human trafficking ring inside that clinic. You blackmailed my mother with Sophie’s existence so she would vote in favor of your corporate merger three years ago.”

Julian stepped forward, holding a tablet showing a live court feed.

“As of ten minutes ago,” Julian announced proudly, “the High Court in London, upon reviewing the physical documents signed by Clara Hale and Dr. Keller, has granted an emergency injunction transferring full, joint legal custody of Sophie Hale to Evelyn Hart and Victor Hale!”

The police captain immediately lowered his paper warrant, stepping away from Sterling.

“Mr. Sterling,” the officer said sternly, “you will need to come with us to the precinct for questioning regarding the Saint Aurelia research logs.”

“This is absurd!” Sterling screamed, backing away as the two officers grabbed his arms. “I am Arthur Sterling! You can’t touch me!”

As Sterling was shoved into the back of the police cruiser, Victor turned around and walked back up the steps into the house.

Evelyn was standing in the doorway, tears streaming down her face, holding Sophie close.

“Is it over?” she whispered.

Victor looked at her, his eyes warm and clear. “The fight for her safety is over, Evelyn. Now, we build her future.”
