Chapter 4 - The Midnight DNA Test

By midnight, the hospital lobby was a cavern of eerie quiet. The daytime rush of panicked parents and barking nurses had faded, replaced by the soft hum of floor buffers and the distant chime of paging speakers.

Luke was sleeping soundly in Room 412, hooked up to a low-flow nasal cannula, his small chest rising and falling in a steady, peaceful rhythm. The terrifying blue tint to his lips was gone, replaced by the warm, flush pink of a resting child.

I sat in the vinyl armchair beside his bed, holding his uninjured hand, gently tracing the soft curve of his knuckles. Outside the window, the Nashville skyline glittered against the dark velvet of the night sky.

The door clicked open softly. Brandon stepped inside, holding a thick manila envelope bearing the logo of the hospital’s forensic pathology and genetics laboratory.

He didn't look at me right away. He walked over to the window, staring out into the glass reflection for a long, agonizing minute before turning around.

“The expedited test results are inside,” Brandon said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion.

My heart hammered against my ribs. “Open them, Brandon. Read them out loud. Let’s end this nightmare.”

Brandon slid his thumb under the adhesive seal of the envelope, pulling out a multi-page legal and medical report. He flipped straight to the final summary page.

The silence in the hospital room stretched out, so heavy and dense it felt like lead.

“Well?” I whispered, tears welling in my eyes.

Brandon lowered the paper slowly, his hands trembling slightly.

“It confirms what Dr. Hayes said,” Brandon murmured, staring at the floor. “Luke is not my biological son.”

The room spun. For a second, I thought I was going to pass out. The ground seemed to drop out from beneath my feet, leaving me suspended in a freezing, bottomless void.

“That’s... that’s a lie,” I choked out, clutching my head. “That makes no sense! I was never with anyone else! I swear to God on my son’s life, Brandon, I never cheated on you!”

“Paige, look at me!” Brandon snapped, finally raising his voice, though it cracked with anguish. “Do you think I want this to be true? Do you think I want to believe that the little boy I’ve raised, the son I love more than my own life, isn't mine by blood?”

“Then how? How is that possible?!” I sobbed, burying my face in my hands.

Brandon walked over, kneeling beside my chair, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. He placed his hands firmly over mine, pulling them away from my face so I was forced to look at him.

“I don't know how,” Brandon whispered fiercely. “But I know my mother. I know the private clinic where I was born thirty-two years ago—St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in Memphis, a hospital that Madeline’s family funded and controlled. And I remember the rumors my uncle whispered to me years ago before he cut ties with our family.”

“What rumors?” I asked, breathless.

“That Madeline didn't just raise children,” Brandon said, his eyes narrowing into a hard, dangerous focus. “She swapped them.”
