Chapter 5 - The Family Fractures

By Friday morning, the news of the hospital incident and Madeline’s explosive outburst had detonated across our extended family network like a tactical bomb.
My phone hadn't stopped buzzing since 6:00 a.m. There were missed calls from aunts, concerned texts from cousins, and a long, venomous email forwarded from Aunt Linda—one of Madeline’s closest sycophants—suggesting that I had “brought shame upon the family” and “trapped Brandon with a child that wasn't his.”
I deleted the email without finishing it, tossing my phone onto the bedside table of the hospital room where Luke was now happily eating a cup of applesauce.
“Mommy, when can we go home?” Luke asked, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, his little fingers bandaged lightly where the stress had caused him to scratch at his skin.
“Soon, sweetie,” I said, forcing a bright, reassuring smile onto my face. “Just as soon as Dad handles a few things.”
Speaking of Brandon, he had left the hospital at dawn, heading straight for his mother’s estate in Belle Meade, determined to tear open the locked filing cabinets in her study before she could destroy whatever paper trail she had spent decades hiding.
At 10:15 a.m., my phone rang. It wasn't an aunt or a cousin. It was Brandon.
“Paige,” he answered, his voice rough and breathless, like he had just been running. “Are you sitting down?”
“Brandon? What happened? Did you find her?”
“I found her study,” Brandon said rapidly, the sound of a crowbar scraping against wood echoing through the phone line. “The safe in the back of the closet—I managed to pry the outer panel off. Paige, you’re not going to believe what is inside here.”
“What is it?” I asked, standing up so sharply the hospital chair tipped over.
“Medical records. Birth registries from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in 1994,” Brandon said, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and incandescent rage. “Files that date back decades. And right at the top of the stack... is my birth certificate. And yours.”
“Mine?” I froze. “What does my birth certificate have to do with St. Jude’s? I was born in Knoxville!”

“No, you weren't,” Brandon said, a dark, heavy silence falling between us over the line. “According to these adoption and hospital transfer logs... you were born in Memphis, Paige. On the exact same day I was born. And my mother was the attending board member who authorized the pediatric exchange.”
The room around me tilted. The white hospital walls seemed to dissolve, revealing a labyrinth of calculated, generational cruelty orchestrated by the woman who had just kicked a bowl of blackberry cobbler across a patio because she thought she had finally erased us.
