Chapter 3 - Whispers Behind Closed Doors

The ride to the St. Jude Community Auditorium was a masterclass in psychological torture.

Meredith sat in the front passenger seat of our SUV, chattering nervously about ticket sales and whether Richard and his wife Eleanor had managed to secure front-row seats. In the rearview mirror, I could see Chloe sitting quietly in the back, staring out the window with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

Every time Meredith mentioned her father, my knuckles turned white against the steering wheel.

"Dad sounded a bit tired on the phone this morning," Meredith remarked, adjusting the visor mirror to check her lipstick. "He’s been working so hard on that historical preservation committee. I swear, at seventy-two, he has more energy than both of us combined."

"Yeah," I replied, my voice dangerously flat. "Remarkable energy."

Meredith glanced sideways at me, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Are you feeling okay, Harrison? You’ve barely said two words since you came out of Chloe’s room."

"Just thinking about work," I lied smoothly, keeping my eyes fixed on the rain-slicked asphalt ahead. "Big merger coming down the pipeline."

"Well, try to leave the corporate stress at the door tonight," Meredith sighed, shaking her head. "Dad is coming specifically to see Chloe play. He’s very proud of her, you know. He expects perfection from her, just like he expected it from me."

Perfection.

The word echoed in my mind like a warning siren. Richard’s demand for perfection wasn't about piano scales or school grades; it was about control. Total, absolute dominion over the women in his family.

When we pulled up to the grand stone entrance of the auditorium, the valet hurried over. Before I even turned off the ignition, Meredith was already unbuckling her seatbelt.

"Hurry up, you two! Dad and Eleanor are already waiting by the lobby fountain!"

Inside the glittering, chandelier-lit lobby, a crowd of proud parents, grandparents, and teachers milled about, chatting and laughing. Standing near the marble fountain, looking distinguished in a tailored charcoal suit with a silk pocket square, was Richard Sterling.

Silver hair neatly combed, a warm, grandfatherly smile on his face, and eyes as cold and calculating as a winter storm.

Beside him stood Eleanor, nodding politely to passing acquaintances.

When Richard spotted Meredith, his face lit up with a practiced, radiant smile. He opened his arms as Meredith rushed forward to embrace him.

"My girl," Richard boomed, his voice carrying effortlessly across the marble lobby. "Look at you. Stunning as always."

Then, his gaze shifted over Meredith’s shoulder, landing directly on me as I walked up with Chloe’s hand securely locked in mine.

For a single, fleeting second, the grandfatherly warmth vanished from Richard’s eyes. A flicker of cold, warning steel replaced it. His gaze dropped to Chloe’s hand in mine, then flicked back up to meet my eyes with an unspoken challenge.

Back off, his eyes whispered. You don't know who you're dealing with.

I didn't flinch. I squeezed Chloe’s small hand gently, stepped forward, and met Richard’s gaze with a cold, dead-eyed stare that made the older man’s smile twitch.

"Richard," I said evenly, stepping between him and my daughter. "Good to see you. Hope your back is holding up."

Richard’s smile tightened at the edges. "Never better, Harrison. Never better."
