Chapter 10 - The Melody of Freedom

A year had passed since the morning Chloe sent that terrifying text message from her bedroom.
Spring had returned to Dublin, Ohio, painting the trees in vibrant shades of green and filling the air with the scent of blooming lilacs.
Inside our living room, the sunlight streamed brightly through wide-open curtains, casting warm golden shafts across the hardwood floor. There were no closed doors in our house anymore. No secrets. No fear.
Sitting at the baby grand piano in the corner of the room was Chloe.
She wore a bright blue dress, her hair tied back with a cheerful yellow ribbon. Her hands moved across the ivory keys with absolute confidence, playing a complex, joyful melody she had written entirely herself.
Meredith stood by the kitchen counter, arranging a vase of fresh spring flowers while smiling over at her daughter.
I leaned against the doorframe, watching them both, holding a cup of coffee.
When the final chord of Chloe’s song echoed through the house, she stopped, turned around on the piano bench, and flashed a brilliant, beaming smile straight at me.
"How was that, Dad?" she asked brightly.
I walked over, knelt down beside her, and kissed the top of her head.

"That was absolute perfection, kiddo," I whispered, looking into her clear, untroubled eyes. "Absolute perfection."
Chloe smiled, turned back to the keyboard, and started playing again—this time, louder, bolder, and completely free.
