Chapter 3 - The Midnight Visitor in the Kitchen

The house was completely dark by midnight.
I hadn’t slept a wink. I lay on my side in the vast expanse of our king-sized bed, listening to Damon’s even breathing beside me. He had returned an hour after Claire left, acting excessively tender, kissing my forehead, and murmuring apologies about missing dinner. I played my part to perfection, murmuring sleepily, letting him believe his deception was absolute.
Around 1:15 AM, a faint, metallic click echoed from the downstairs kitchen.
It wasn't the sound of a prowler breaking in. It was the sound of someone unlocking the French doors leading from the garden with a key—a key that only a select few people possessed.
Slowly, carefully, I slid out from beneath the covers. I slipped my feet into my slippers, draped a soft cashmere robe over my shoulders, and glided into the hallway. The hardwood floors were cold beneath my feet, but adrenaline kept me warm.
I crept down the curved staircase, keeping to the shadows where the banister cast long, geometric lines across the walls. As I reached the bottom landing, the soft amber glow of the under-cabinet lights in the kitchen illuminated a figure standing by the island.
It was a woman I had never seen before.
She was dressed in a sharp, slate-gray trench coat, her hair pulled back into a severe bun. She was holding a glass of water, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway.
“I wouldn’t come any closer if I were you,” I said quietly, my voice cutting through the silence of the kitchen like glass.
The woman gasped, spinning around so fast she nearly dropped her glass. For a second, panic flashed across her features, but it was quickly replaced by a profound, heavy resignation. She looked at my protruding belly, and her expression softened into deep, aching sorrow.
“You’re Hannah,” she whispered.
“And you are trespassing,” I replied, stepping into the light of the kitchen. “Who are you, and why do you have a key to my house?”
The woman set the glass down on the marble counter with a soft clink. She raised her hands defensively, palms open. “My name is Dr. Elena Rostova. Until three weeks ago, I was the head of psychiatric admissions at Saint Jude Memorial—one of the private facilities owned by your husband’s corporation.”
My breath hitched, but I forced myself to stand tall. “Saint Jude? What does that have to do with me?”
Elena walked slowly toward the kitchen island, pulling a thick manila folder from beneath her coat and placing it gently on the marble.
“Everything,” she said grimly. “Damon didn’t miss your ultrasound today to sleep with your friend just because of a sudden lapse in judgment. That affair is a calculated leverage point. But more than that... your husband has been laying the groundwork to have you declared legally incompetent.”
The room seemed to tilt. Even though my mind had already suspected a dark conspiracy, hearing it spoken aloud by an insider sent a wave of nausea rolling through me.
“Incompetent?” I forced the word out.
“An involuntary psychiatric hold,” Elena explained, her voice trembling slightly. “For the past four months, every prescription refill, every medical consultation note, and every psychological evaluation entered into your private health portal has been systematically altered by Dr. Vance under Damon’s direct orders. They are documenting severe paranoia, erratic mood swings, and profound hallucinations.”
I stared at the folder on the counter. My hands began to shake, not from fear, but from a blinding, white-hot fury.
“Why?” I whispered. “Why go to such monstrous lengths?”
“Because of your family’s holdings,” Elena said, looking me dead in the eye. “When your father passed away, he left seventy percent voting shares of Cross Healthcare Development in a conditional trust—a trust that automatically transfers full, unchallengeable executive control to you upon the birth of your child, or reverts to Damon only if you are declared mentally unfit or incapacitated.”
The pieces clicked together with terrifying precision.
Damon didn’t just want my money; he wanted absolute dictatorship over the empire my father built. And he needed me locked away in a psychiatric ward before our daughter was born so he could seize complete control without a legal battle.
“He planned to take my baby, too,” I murmured, the horror dawning on me.
“Yes,” Elena nodded solemnly. “As your legal guardian and conservator, he would have total custody. And your best friend, Claire... she was promised a position on the board and a massive financial settlement once the divorce on grounds of your ‘mental deterioration’ was finalized.”
I looked down at the manila folder, then back up at Elena. The fear that had paralyzed me earlier that morning was gone, replaced by a cold, resolute steel.

“You didn’t come here just to tell me this, Dr. Rostova,” I said. “You risked your career—and likely your safety—to break in here tonight. What do you want?”
Elena’s lips curved into a fierce, determined smile. “I want to watch Damon Cross burn to the ground. And I brought the kindling.”
