Chapter 5 - The Friday Morning Reckoning

The executive boardroom on the top floor of Cross Healthcare Development headquarters was packed to capacity.

Sunlight poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the polished mahogany conference table where the board members sat in tense, expectant silence. At the head of the table sat Damon Cross, looking every bit the charismatic, powerful billionaire CEO. His suit was impeccably tailored, his expression a masterclass of sorrowful, burdened leadership.

When the heavy double doors swung open and I walked into the room, every head turned.

I wore a sharp, cream-colored designer pantsuit that accentuated my seven-month belly, my posture unyielding, my head held high. Behind me walked Dr. Elena Rostova, carrying a heavy leather briefcase, flanked by two senior corporate attorneys representing my father’s estate.

Damon stood up immediately, his face adopting an expression of tender, concerned alarm.

“Hannah?” he said, stepping away from his chair. “Sweetheart, what are you doing here? You shouldn’t be out of bed, especially given everything Dr. Vance told us about your condition—”

“Sit down, Damon,” I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the expansive room with the absolute authority of a commanding officer.

Damon froze, blinking in disbelief. “Hannah, honey, you’re clearly not thinking clearly. Let’s go home—”

“I said, sit down.”

One of the senior board members, Arthur Pendelton—a lifelong friend of my late father—slapped his palm onto the mahogany table. “You heard your wife, Damon. Sit in your chair.”

Damon’s jaw tightened, a flicker of genuine panic finally piercing his polished exterior. He glanced around the table, noticing for the first time that several long-standing board members who had been exiled years ago were sitting in the visitor gallery, watching him with cold, unforgiving eyes.

“This is absurd,” Damon forced a strained laugh, trying to recover his composure. “My wife is currently experiencing severe prenatal psychosis. As her legal guardian and CEO, I move to adjourn this meeting and—”

“You are not her guardian, Damon. And you certainly aren't in control of this company anymore,” Elena Rostova said smoothly as she stepped forward and opened her briefcase.

Elena pulled out a stack of documents and distributed them to every board member along the table.

“My name is Dr. Elena Rostova,” she announced, her voice echoing off the glass walls. “Until recently, I was the head of psychiatric admissions at Saint Jude Memorial. Over the past seventy-two hours, I have submitted a complete dossier to the State Medical Board, the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission, and the primary stakeholders of Cross Healthcare Development.”

Damon lunged forward, his face turning pale. “Stop right there! Security, remove this woman from the building immediately!”

“Nobody is moving,” one of the federal attorneys stepped in, flashing a badge. “Damon Cross, you are currently under investigation for corporate embezzlement, medical fraud, conspiracy to commit institutional kidnapping, and the falsification of psychiatric records.”

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Shouts echoed off the walls. Board members stood up, paper rustling frantically as they read through the damning evidence in front of them—including the wire transfer receipts, the forged medical evaluations, and the secret offshore accounts.

Damon stared at me, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror. The mask had completely melted away, revealing the desperate, cornered fraud underneath.

“You...” Damon whispered, his voice shaking. “You knew. All this time, you knew.”

I walked slowly around the mahogany table until I was standing right in front of him. I looked him dead in the eye, resting one hand protectively over my daughter resting safely beneath my heart.

“Did you really think I wouldn't recognize the woman who helped you destroy our marriage?” I whispered softly, just loud enough for him to hear. “You thought I was weak because I loved you. You thought my pregnancy made me blind. You made one fatal mistake, Damon: you underestimated a mother fighting for her child.”

Before Damon could speak, the boardroom doors opened again, and two local police officers stepped inside, accompanied by Claire Holloway, who looked pale, tearful, and handcuffed.

Claire caught sight of me across the room and burst into desperate sobbing. “Hannah! Please! He forced me! Damon told me you were losing your mind, he said—”

“Save it for the judge, Claire,” I said without even turning around.

The officers moved past the gallery, placed cold steel cuffs around Damon’s wrists, and hauled him backward away from the table. As they dragged him out of the boardroom he had tried to steal, Damon cast one final, broken look in my direction—a look of total defeat.

The door closed behind them. The silence that returned to the boardroom wasn't tense or watchful anymore. It was clean. It was victorious.
