Chapter 4 - Waking Up to the Truth

The hospital room was bathed in the soft, muted blue light of an IV monitor. Outside, the rain drummed a steady, melancholy rhythm against the double-paned window.

Ashley stirred against the crisp white pillows. Her eyelids fluttered, heavy and dry, before opening completely. For a long moment, she stared up at the acoustic ceiling tiles, disoriented by the antiseptic smell and the plastic cuff around her wrist.

"Hey there, superstar," a gentle voice whispered.

Ashley turned her head slowly. Sitting in a chair beside the bed was Officer Natalie, holding a cup of lukewarm hospital coffee. On the edge of the mattress, washed and dried with its crooked ear propped up with a rubber band, sat Buddy the stuffed puppy.

Ashley’s small hand immediately reached out, her fingers closing tightly around Buddy’s soft fabric.

"Where... where am I?" Ashley whispered, her voice like dry paper.

"You're safe, Ashley," Natalie said, leaning forward and pressing a cool, wet cloth gently against the child’s forehead. "You’re at the hospital. The doctors helped you get strong again. Do you remember me?"

Ashley nodded slightly. "You're the lady who promised nobody would yell at me."

"And I meant it," Natalie smiled softly, though her eyes were shining with unshed tears. "Ashley... I need to ask you something very important. Do you remember the night your daddy left to go to the store?"

The little girl’s face tightened. Her lower lip began to tremble, and a single tear escaped down her pale cheek.

"He said he'd be right back," Ashley whispered, her voice breaking. "He told me to lock the deadbolt and not open the door for anybody except him. He said he had to get my medicine because my chest hurt when I breathed."

"I know, sweetheart," Natalie said, her voice dropping into a tender murmur. "Your daddy bought the medicine. We found it. He was driving back home to you when his truck got caught in the big storm."

Ashley sat up slightly, the monitors beeping with a slightly faster rhythm. "Is he coming home now?"

Natalie swallowed hard. How do you tell a seven-year-old child who has already lost her mother that her father is currently missing in a raging, flooded river? How do you explain the cruel unpredictability of nature to someone who only understands a father’s simple promise?

Before Natalie could find the right words, the door opened quietly, and a social worker stepped in, followed by a tall, solemn-faced man holding a worn leather jacket.

It was Tom, Andrew’s coworker. He stopped at the foot of the bed, his hands gripping the leather jacket as if it were an anchor.

"Ashley," Tom said softly, his voice trembling. "Do you remember me? Uncle Tom?"

Ashley blinked, recognizing him. "You bring daddy donuts on Saturdays."

Tom’s composure cracked. A sob escaped his throat, and he quickly wiped his hand across his face, nodding. "Yeah, kiddo. I bring the donuts." He stepped closer to the bed, kneeling down so he was eye-level with the little girl. "Your daddy... your daddy loves you more than anything in this world, Ashley. And he fought really hard to get back to you that night."

"Is he lost?" Ashley asked, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

Tom looked up at Officer Natalie, pleading silently for help.

Natalie placed a comforting hand on Ashley’s small shoulder. "We’re looking for him, Ashley. The whole town is looking for him. But until we find him, you're going to stay with Uncle Tom and me. We’re going to take care of you, just like your daddy would want."

Ashley didn't answer right away. She pulled Buddy tightly against her chest, staring past them out the hospital window toward the gray, weeping sky.

"He promised," she whispered to herself. "Daddy always keeps his promises."
