Chapter 9 - The Fight for Breath

The sterile white lights of the county trauma center hummed with intense urgency as the double doors flew open and paramedics rushed a gurney through the corridor.

"Severe hypothermia, core temperature at ninety-one degrees, deep laceration to the right femoral area with significant blood loss, and secondary aspiration pneumonia!" the lead paramedic shouted, steering the bed toward Trauma Room 3.

Dr. Vance, the same physician who had treated Ashley days earlier, stood ready with a team of nurses. As they transferred Andrew to the operating table, Dr. Vance caught sight of something clutched tightly in the unconscious man’s hand—a sealed plastic pharmacy bag.

Even through delirium, trauma, and hypothermia, Andrew had refused to let go of his daughter's medicine.

"Get an IV line started immediately, warm saline flush, and prep for emergency surgery to close that leg wound," Dr. Vance ordered, his voice sharp and focused. "This man’s body is shutting down, but his stubbornness is keeping him here. Let’s match it."

Outside in the family waiting area, the news had already reached the nurses' station.

Tom, Andrew’s coworker, paced the linoleum floor while Officer Natalie sat in a chair nearby, her hands still stained with a trace of river mud.

The doors swung open, and Dr. Vance walked out, removing his surgical cap. He looked tired, but as he approached them, a faint, weary smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"He’s stable," Dr. Vance announced, letting out a long breath. "The surgery on his leg went well, and we’re warming his core temperature up slowly. He aspirated some dirty water, so his lungs are going to need time to recover, but barring any unforeseen infections... he’s going to make it."

Natalie stood up, letting out a breath she felt like she had been holding for days. "Can he... can he have visitors?"

"Not tonight," the doctor said. "He needs ICU monitoring for at least twenty-four hours. But..." Dr. Vance paused, a warm glint in his eye. "I suspect there's a little girl upstairs who is going to want to hear this news."

Ten minutes later, Natalie stood in the doorway of Ashley’s pediatric room.

The little person was sitting up in bed, nibbling on a saltine cracker with Buddy propped up beside her on the pillow. When Natalie walked in, Ashley’s eyes lit up with eager anticipation.

"Did you find him?" Ashley asked, her voice bright. "Did you find my daddy?"

Natalie walked over, sitting on the edge of the mattress, and took Ashley’s small hands in hers. She couldn't hold back her smile.

"We found him, Ashley," Natalie said softly. "Your daddy is downstairs resting. He’s safe, and the doctors are taking great care of him. And do you know what else?"

Ashley shook her head eagerly.

May you like

"He kept his promise," Natalie whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "He brought your medicine all the way home."

Ashley beamed, clutching Buddy tightly. "I knew he would. My daddy is the strongest superhero in the whole world."
