Chapter 6 - The Unraveling at the Gala

“Nobody invited her, Georgette, because this isn’t your event,” Harrison announced, stepping forward into the spotlight at the center of the ballroom. “In fact, as of 8:00 a.m. this morning, you, your husband Alistair, and your mother Ottoline no longer legally own the venue, the catering contract, or the clothes on your backs.”

The silence in the room was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the marble floor.

Georgette let out a shrill, nervous laugh, attempting to rally her social armor. “Have you completely lost your mind, old man? My husband is Alistair Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Croft! We own half of this county!”

“Your husband’s assets were frozen by federal court order twenty minutes ago,” Harrison replied calmly, unzipping his briefcase and pulling out official stamped documents. “Along with the corporate shell accounts you used to misappropriate over twelve million dollars in hidden trust assets belonging exclusively to my primary client: Zora Whitlock.”

The name Whitlock echoed off the crystal chandeliers like a gunshot.

Ottoline pushed herself up from the VIP table, her face mottled with rage and terror. “Lies! That’s entirely a lie! Arthur left everything to me! We earned our wealth through generations of legitimate enterprise!”

“Your husband Arthur left everything to his eldest daughter, Zora, under a binding 1974 family trust that you and your late co-conspirators fraudulently suppressed for thirty years,” Harrison countered, holding up the original trust deed and my father’s signed confession. “We have the bank transfer logs, the tax evasion audits, and the federal indictments ready for execution.”

Georgette spun around, her eyes wide with panic as she spotted her husband, Alistair, pushing his way through the stunned crowd, his face pale and sweating profusely under the stage lights.

“Alistair! Tell them they’re lying!” Georgette screamed, grabbing his lapel. “Tell them this is a joke!”

Alistair didn't look at his wife. He looked at Harrison, then at me, and whispered hoarsely, “The accounts... they’re all locked. The federal marshals are at our home right now.”

The realization hit Georgette like a physical blow. Her knees buckled slightly, and she caught herself against the edge of a flower-laden table, sending crystal vases crashing to the floor in a shower of water and shattered glass.

The high-society elites who had fawned over her moments before began backing away in horror, whispering behind their hands, eager to distance themselves from a collapsing criminal enterprise.

I didn't shout. I didn't gloat. I simply stepped forward, holding Junia’s small, steady hand, and walked straight up to where my mother and sister stood trembling in the ruins of their stolen empire.
