Chapter 4 - The Strategic Web

After I escorted Daniel out—with a firm promise that any further contact would result in a criminal complaint—the house felt colder, but lighter. I retreated to my study, surrounded by stacks of legal texts and a lifetime of hard-won wisdom.

Marcus entered, his face grim. "I swept his car," he said, handing me a small, metallic object. "He had a GPS tracker under the bumper. I disabled it. But there’s something else. His firm. I did some digging—the 'discretion' they pride themselves on? It’s a cover. They’ve been settling lawsuits out of court for years, using NDAs to keep high-profile domestic abuse cases buried. He isn't just an outlier, Eleanor. He’s a beneficiary of a system."

I looked at the tracker. It was a crude instrument for a man of his sophistication, a sign that he was losing his composure.

"He thinks he’s hunting," I murmured. "But he’s walking into a kill box."

I began to draft a series of subpoenas. Not for a court—not yet—but for the regulatory bodies that held sway over the partners of major firms. If he wanted to play the lawyer, I would show him the difference between a practitioner and a legend.

"Clara," I called out. She walked in, looking stronger than she had hours ago. "I need you to tell me about the finances. Does he keep shared accounts? Does he use the firm's accounts for personal expenses?"

"He says the money belongs to the firm, and I’m just 'allocated' a portion," she said.

I smiled, a sharp, humorless movement of my lips. "If he’s been co-mingling funds to hide assets, that’s not just a domestic issue. That’s fraud. And the IRS takes a much dimmer view of that than a local judge ever could."

We were building a multi-front war. I had the physical evidence of his violence, the digital proof of his surveillance, and now, we were digging for the financial trail. He thought he was untouchable because he understood how to manipulate the people in his circles. He had no idea how to defend against a woman who had spent decades writing the law, not just practicing it.

"Are you ready for the next move?" I asked, placing my hand on hers.

Clara nodded, her jaw set. "Yes. I’m ready."
