Chapter 6 - The Filing

The filing of the case was a masterclass in calculated destruction. I didn't file in the local jurisdiction where Daniel had his cronies. I utilized my connections to have the case moved to the State Superior Court, specifically into the hands of Judge Halloway, a jurist known for his absolute disdain for lawyers who abused their positions.

The moment the documents hit the docket, the ripple effect was instantaneous.

I sat in my study with Clara as we watched the news cycle begin to turn. The Legal Times had picked up on the motion for emergency protective orders, focusing heavily on the allegations of financial fraud within Mercer, Vale and Knox.

“He’s calling,” Clara said, her phone vibrating on the table. It was the only phone that was still active, monitored by Marcus.

“Don't answer,” I said.

“He sounds… scared, Mom.”

“Good. Fear is the first step toward accountability. He’s spent years making you feel small, making you believe that his voice was the only one that mattered. Now, it’s his turn to hear the silence of a world that no longer cares what he has to say.”

The firm began its retreat almost immediately. A frantic press release appeared on their website, announcing that Daniel was being placed on “indefinite leave” pending an internal investigation. It was the classic corporate pivot—the attempt to distance the institution from the individual. But I had already forwarded our files to the bar association.

I looked at Clara, who was watching the screen with a mixture of disbelief and relief. “They’re eating their own, Clara. That’s what happens when you build a house on a foundation of lies. The moment the wind picks up, the whole thing comes down.”

The legal battle had officially begun, but we weren't just fighting for a divorce. We were fighting for the truth. And in this courtroom, the truth was something Daniel was entirely unprepared to face.
