Chapter 10 - Justice in the Sunlight

Three months later, the Arizona desert had surrendered to the vibrant, blooming warmth of late spring.

The trial had been swift, devastating, and absolute. Miriam Richard was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for racketeering, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit child abuse. Derek accepted a plea deal for twelve years in federal custody. The magnificent Scottsdale estate with the bougainvillea and the Virgin Mary statue was seized by the federal government, liquidated, and converted into a state-funded children’s trauma recovery center.

On a Saturday morning in May, Hailey and I stood on the front lawn of our new home—a small, bright, single-story house in a quiet, sunlit neighborhood in Flagstaff, surrounded by tall pine trees and cool mountain air.

There were no high fences hiding dark secrets. There were no polished matrons standing at the door with an iron rule and a hidden cruelty.

Hailey was running across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted the week before, her laughter ringing out clear and unburdened against the morning breeze.

Her hands were fully healed, the pink scars fading into faint, silver lines that she no longer hid behind long sleeves.

I stood on the porch with a cup of coffee in my hand, watching her run.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a work email or a call from the real estate office.

Instead, it was a text message from Detective Sarah Vance, who had recently been promoted to captain.

“Just wanted to check in on you two. Hope the mountain air is treating you right. Let me know if you ever need anything at all.”

I smiled, typing back a quick reply:

May you like

“We’re doing better than ever, Captain. We’re finally home.”

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, took a deep breath of the crisp, clean pine-scented air, and stepped off the porch to chase my daughter into the sun. The nightmare was over, and the rest of our lives was just beginning.
