Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Perfect Estate

By Wednesday afternoon, the scope of the federal investigation had blown wide open across local and national news outlets.

Headlines on every major news station flashed the same horrifying reality: “Scottsdale Matriarch and Corporate Executive Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement and Child Abuse Syndicate.”

Detective Vance and I sat in a secure conference room at the police precinct, reviewing the mountains of evidence federal agents had pulled from Miriam’s house.

“It goes deeper than we ever imagined, Paige,” Vance said, sliding a ledger across the table. “Miriam wasn't just a controlling mother. She was the financial mastermind behind a shell corporation network that funneled kickbacks from public construction contracts into private offshore accounts.”

“And Derek?” I asked, looking at photographs of my ex-husband looking defeated in his orange county jail jumpsuit.

“Derek was her front man,” Vance explained. “He used his corporate position to secure municipal bids, and Miriam used psychological manipulation, intimidation, and physical abuse to keep everyone in the family terrified into absolute compliance. Anyone who threatened to expose the financial fraud—or anyone who showed too much independence—was dealt with.”

“Including Hailey,” I whispered, staring down at my hands. “She was just collateral damage in their corporate empire. Because I dared to divorce him, because I dared to walk away with my daughter, they wanted to break her so completely that she would never feel safe with me.”

“Well, their empire just collapsed,” Vance said, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Miriam is being held without bail on federal conspiracy and racketeering charges, in addition to state-level child abuse indictments. And Derek is looking at fifteen to twenty years minimum in a federal penitentiary.”

Just then, my phone buzzed on the table.

It wasn't an unknown number. It was a text message from a secure, restricted line used by the hospital social worker.

“Paige, Hailey had her trauma therapy session this morning. She drew a picture of a bird flying out of a cage. She asked if the bad people were gone for good. You can tell her yes.”

A hot tear slipped down my cheek, but for the first time in years, it wasn't a tear of fear. It was a tear of profound, unbreakable relief.
