Chapter 5 - Legal Warfare

The sight of Victoria Dudley being forced face-down onto a white linen dining table as silver handcuffs were slapped around her manicured wrists was a image I would treasure for the rest of my life.

She screamed and kicked, her pastel Chanel suit getting stained with spilled mimosa and fallen shrimp cocktail.

“You can’t do this to me!” Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking into a frantic, unhinged wail. “My brother is a federal judge! My family built this city! Robert Sterling, I will sue you for every penny you possess!”

Robert didn't even blink. He stood calmly beside Chloe, leaning down to speak directly into Victoria’s ear as the officers hauled her to her feet.

“Your brother, Judge Edward Dudley, was forced into early retirement at six o'clock this morning after federal regulators discovered his offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands,” Robert said softly. “You have no family influence left, Victoria. You are completely alone.”

Lewis broke down entirely. As two heavy-set officers pinned his arms behind his back, the polished young attorney began sobbing like a terrified child.

“Chloe! Please!” Lewis begged, his tears running down his pale face. “Tell them it was a mistake! I loved you! My mother forced me to do it! She made me stand outside the door!”

Chloe looked at the man she had almost spent her life with. The love that had once blinded her was completely gone, replaced by a cold, quiet disgust.

“You stood outside that door and watched them bleed me, Lewis,” Chloe said, her voice remarkably steady. “You aren't a man. You’re just a coward hiding behind a monster.”

As the officers dragged Victoria, Lewis, and the six screaming socialites out through the main doors of the Ritz-Carlton into a fleet of waiting police cruisers, a crowd of reporters and photojournalists pressed against the glass.

Robert’s public relations firm had ensured that every major news outlet in South Florida was outside.

Flashes went off like blinding fireworks. Headlines were already populating live news feeds across the country:

By noon, the legal tsunami hit the Dudley family from every conceivable angle.

Lewis’s law firm held an emergency board meeting and voted unanimously to terminate his employment, citing severe moral turpitude and criminal conduct. The Florida Bar Association issued an immediate emergency suspension of his law license pending criminal trial.

Meanwhile, Rachel Stern, our primary civil litigation attorney, filed an emergency petition for an annulment based on fraud and physical violence, along with a fifty-million-dollar civil suit against Victoria Dudley, Lewis Dudley, and the six accomplice families.

Sitting in Rachel’s high-rise legal office in downtown Miami, I looked over the financial freeze orders being issued across the state.

“What about Victoria’s estate in Coral Gables?” I asked.

Rachel smiled thinly. “Robert bought the primary mortgage debt on her estate two hours ago from the holding bank. He has already declared the loan in default due to criminal forfeiture clauses. By Friday, Victoria Dudley will be legally homeless.”

I looked over at Chloe. She was sitting on the leather sofa, holding a warm cup of tea, watching the rain hit the window.

The physical pain was still there, but for the first time in months, the heavy weight of fear had lifted from her chest.

“Mom?” Chloe called out softly.

I walked over, sitting beside her. “Yes, sweetie?”

“Thank you for calling Dad,” she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder. “I thought my life was over last night.”

I wrapped my arm around her, kissing the top of her head. “Your life is just beginning, Chloe. And nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
